Coastal Carolina University Percussion Department

About Me

More VideosWelcome to the Coastal Carolina University Percussion Department MySpace page! The percussion department at CCU actively involves all of our students in the "art" of making music. It is our goal that during your time at Coastal Carolina University you are provided intense study in the areas of percussion composition, performance, and education. Our primary areas of focus are traditional concert percussion (Classical and Non), Drumset (All Styles), World Music (Steel Band, African Drum and Dance, Taiko, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban) , and solo and ensemble percussion. Students who enter the department at CCU are also provided several unique opportunities to teach and play in the Myrtle Beach Area.If you have questions about auditioning for the CCU percussion studio, please contact: Director of Percussion studies Kurry Seymour at [email protected] or www.myspace.com/kurryseymour.Thank you for your time and consideration! _____________________________________________________A few quotes from past and present Coastal Carolina Percussion Students:"Coastal's percussion department is so unique to others. There's a great sense of camaraderie in all of the percussion classes. There's a wonderful spirit of friendship, fun, and eagerness to make music. The program we are in remindes us that making music is supposed to be fun!"-Sarah Abushakera (piano major)"Percussion studies at Coastal is 'conceptualization 101'. Repetition is important, however, without an understanding or 'concept' behind the process, the time invested in repetition is irrelevant."-Andrew Brought (percussion major)"Coming to Coastal Carolina University was the greatest decision I have ever made. Getting involved in so many different things is the greatest experience. Being involved in the world music program is even better. I have been involved in the world music program since I was a freshman at Coastal and I wouldn’t miss one semester of it for the world."-Michelle Loscalzo (woodwind major)"'Rhythms are many, Spirit is one.'-That was the quote that Kimberly Dawn-Clayton painted for the World Concert Fall 07 that accurately describes this percussion department! Along with hard work, appreciation, definite dedication, and out-of-classroom experiences, I have learned more about music and performing than I ever knew. Each student is challenged to question how you play and our role in an ensemble, helping you understand that music is more than about playing notes on a page, it's how you dive into it and express yourself in it that makes it so interesting and fun! If you love music and art as I do, then this is the studio to be a part of!"-Heather Sweeney (percussion major)"Music is never just notes on a page or something to rush through - it is something to treasure and one of the few things we have left to express ourselves in today's society. All of these ideas were brought to life in my eyes through the percussion ensembles, the music department, the music faculty, and the music students at Coastal Carolina University."-Jodie Rowe (percussion major-graduated 2007)_______________________________________________________ _________Coastal Carolina University Steel Band
