Museum Mission Statement:
The Poe Museum celebrates the life of Edgar Allan Poe through exhibitions, lectures, publications, special events, school and educational programs. Poe created or mastered five literary genres-the short story, detective fiction, science fiction, lyric poetry and, of course, the horror story. His dark genius invites
adults and children to read and love literature. The Museum's mission is to interpret the life and times of Edgar Allan Poe while fostering a life-long love, appreciation and support of the literary arts and early 19th century southern literary culture.Edgar, or Eddie as we affectionately call him here, loved women, beauty, art, and of course poetry. He loved animals. He was an army man, loved discipline and regiment. He was an orphan, searching always for the stability and love that a family, a mother and father, could provide. He found none of it. He was poor. He was a genious. He was a Richmonder, a Southerner. Spoke with a Southern accent, and called Richmond home for over 13 years of his life. He wrote some of the best known poetry and stories in American Literature:
The Raven
The Tell Tale Heart
Annabel Lee
The Pit and the Pendulum
The Cask of Amontillado
Fall of the House of Usher
Ulalume
The Bells
His words transcend time, culture, age, race, or class. He perfected the Gothic Horror story, invented the modern Detective story, and became one of the foremost literary critics of his day. He was a mystery in his own wretched life. He is now a legend.
