About Me

BIG was born out of a one-off night based around a love for bass (Bass IS Good) but has grown legs and will be running monthly for the year that is 2008 in the best freakin' venue in town - IVY. Our initial idea has made way for our general adoration of music that just doesn't get played enough, we plan to air as many bands, DJs and visual artists as we can squeeze in who share our love for the unheard. Expect a psychadelic platter catering for everyone and no one ... ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------This month BIG team up with the institution that is Triptych to bring you a day of psychadelic audio and 12-String hallucinatory folk in the form of James Blackshaw. Supporting will be one of Edinburgh's freshest and most innovative folk & blues talents Ewan Gibson and the ever handsome BIG DJs (The Frantic Ant & Godot).James Blackshaw + +Here's the hyperbole-less description from the Triptych promotion..."A supernatural twelve-string diviner, James Blackshaw’s intoxicating muse educes European classicism, contemporary minimalism, exquisite melody and nigh-on Balearic trance. His incredible, finger-picking idiom pays lavish homage to the guitar mavericks of Sixties folk / raga melting pot Takoma (John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho et al).The enthralling Londoner’s magnetic drones, mellifluous overtones and recurring patterns are fired by an ardent melodic instinct that burns at the heart of Blackshaw’s magic. Intelligent, meditative and discreetly meteoric, his instrumentals have been exalted by Pitchfork, Uncut, The Wire – and he’s toured with the likes of Espers, Sir Richard Bishop and Marissa Nadler. His latest album, The Cloud of Unknowing, is extraordinary. He will take your breath away."Ewan Gibson + +Classically trained then formally liberated, Edinburgh-based guitarist Ewan Gibson pushes the envelope of traditional 6-string transcendence in a manner similar to loner spirits such John McLaughlin and John Martyn. Moving from Edinburgh through to Glasgow, via a stint with hip-hop collective ‘A Different Kind’, he quickly won over audiences with a shimmering, liquid take on 60’s folk/blues . Injecting traditional forms with a contemporary, lucid urgency, his sound will appeal to anyone entranced by the same spirit which possessed The Fairport Convention, Kate Rusby and Jack Rose. + + DAVID BARBAROSSA & DANGER DANGER RUN RUN RUN - Waists were wiggled, glass was broken, funny songs were sung, obscurities were spun.

March saw a gypsy-rave, psyce-disco bonanza with a live performance from Danger Danger Run Run Run the loveable alt-folk act formed by three local mentalists that no one likes and a DJ set from David Barbarossa whose record collection was used as a weapon against the Nazis in the Second World War. We expected people to wiggle their waists and fall over. They did. Here's some shots from Febuary...
