The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy of movies, made after the already written books by J.R.R. Tolkien. The director of all three movies is Peter Jackson. There are three seperate movies and books, but the story is allways the same. The titles of the movies as well as the titles of the books are: The Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers and The Return of the King.
The main story circles around the Ring, which was made by the almighty Sauron, so he could rule all the other rings that were also made, only that they were divided between elves, dwarfs and humans. Anyways, Sauron has lost the Ring in the battle with humans and elves and of course he wants it back. After many years, the Ring passes from Bilbo to Frodo and it's his job to take it to Mordor, the only place where it can be destroyed. So, at a secret council they form the fellowship of the ring, which would go help him carry the burden. But lots of things happen on their journey and the fellowship is separated (some even die),so at the end, only Frodo and another hobit, Sam, are left to finish the mission alone. Meanwhile, the battle for Rohan begins and after Saruman and Sauron are defeated, they start building an army, so they could win the battle for Middle Earth. The army is enormous, thousands of orks and mercenaries, all willing to help Sauron and Saruman defeat human and take over the Middle Earth. But at the same time, Aragorn takes back his place as the king and calls up the army of the damned, and they all come back, to fight their last battle.
