Daniel, a freshman at Northeastern University in Boston, collapsed from a cardiac arrest on November 19, 2004 while performing with his band, The Modern Day Saint. Staff at the scene performed CPR and used a defibrillator until emergency services arrived.
Despite the quick emergency response, Dan suffered an anoxic brain injury. He spent the first two weeks post-injury (including Thanksgiving) in the ICU at BayState, followed by two weeks in the Neurological Observation Room. He transferred to an acute rehabilitation hospital, HealthSouth Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital, just before Christmas 2004, and was at Worcester Skilled Care Center from May 2005 until March 2007. In September 2005, Dan underwent surgery to have a defibrillator implanted, to prevent any future cardiac arrhythmias. He is presently at home with his family, and continuing to receive therapy to recover from his brain injury.
Dan has his own computer now and sees his MySpace account on a fairly regular basis. We hope to use this as a way for Dan to communicate and stay in touch with his friends.
