Vitaly Vladimirov

About Me

Vitaly born in 1968 in Sverdlovsk (now named Ekaterinburg). Vitaly graduated as a trombonist from both the Sverdlovsk Tchaikovsky Music College and the Chelyabinsk State Academy of Art.

His proffesional playing career began in 1985 as a trombonist in "Gamma-Jazz";, a former group of the well-known Sverdlovsk guitarist, Valery Birich.

Since 1987 he has played a prominent role in various projects for the Israeli composer and pianist, Michael Agre. These have included experiments in the composition of music for modern chamber theatre.

In 1990-1992 he worked with the Ural Philarmonic Orchestra with the famous Petersburg composer, Anatoly Zatin, arranging his shows for musical theatre.

From 1993 to 1995 he was a soloist with "AMA-Jazz" (Association of Avant-garde Musicians) together with saxophonist Igor Parashuk and trumpeter Sergei Pron'. This collective took part in the Russian-French festival (touring Moscow, Protvino, Chernogolovka) in 1993.

Vitaly Vladimirov is a trombonist with a huge range of musical perfomance interests, experience and capabilities which freely allow him to explore and create within any musical sphere, from bebop to modern chamber music to avant-garde. He regularly participates in the concerts and studio recording sessions of european and american musicians on tour in Ekaterinburg (Peter Brotzman, Larry Howard, Melton Mustafa, Jesse Jones, Richie Cole, Leon Ptashka). Vitaly has worked in close partnership with Sergei Pron; (Trumpet), Igor Parashuk (Saxophone), Igor Zaharov (Drums) and his Batukada Orchestra on a large number of occasions. Both within this collective and within his own personal projects, he has been devoted to exploration and innovation within ethnic and modern improvisational music.

Vitaly Vladimirov is the Head of the Jazz Department at the Sverdlovsk Tchaikovsky Music College where he lectures in arranging for both jazz and classical music. He is also the founder of the college big-band. He has written over 40 compositions and 100 arrangements for both big-band and quintet. On top of this he has written a collection of orchestral compositions (2006), 15 short pieces for both saxophone and organ and saxophone and piano for chamber orchestra. He has also arranged musicals and music for radioshows which through the years have graced both the Russian stage and airwaves alike.

Vitaly is considered one of the best Jazz trombonists in Eurasia. He is undoubtedly a performer dedicated to deep and energetic musical exploration and delivery, which often comes with the most unexpected of outcomes. He has the gift of being able to create and bring his ideas to life, and these ideas continue to maintain a powerful stylistic resonance.

As an arranger, performer, composer and organiser, Vitaly has always followed a path which he considers to be of most value in respect of modern-day music.

The birth and formation of his own musical language has arisen from a tremendous knowledge of music itself, a deep understanding of modern music in general and a delicate musical taste and appreciation. It is worth noting that Russia is presently in crisis over it's lack of jazz trombone players, but with Vitlaly in mind, one may look to the future development of this with a sense of optimism.

As one of the most interesting trombonists in modern russia, Vitaly pursues a very creative approach to his playing and his intuition, as a performer, provides him with the ability to truly perform both in the setting of a symphonic orchestra or a jazz duo or trio.

Vitaly's compositions for big-band, ensemble and organ, are without saying always rich and full of bright melodic thought. His continued participation in the concerts of european and american musicians allows him the opportunity to experience and contribute to the ever-changing world of modern improvisational music.
