Born (June.19.1979) & raised a Gemini in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (Ishpeming), .syms. (pronounced like rhymes) has been motivated by inspirational speakers, art, poetry, and music since birth. He produces his own music, writes lyrics & poetry, paints, and records all of his own material out of his home.
In 1998, he hooked up with producer/composer Marshal "shal" Nault and he was hooked. They released underground tapes for a couple of years and achieved a good response. In 2000, .syms. recorded his first solo single "Time". The buzz grew and it was time to perform. In an area filled with country and rock groups, .syms. is the first "hip-hop"/spoken word artist to bring his sound to the streets of the desolate terrain of the U.P. His first single "Time" was a huge hit throughout Marquette County and beyond. Following came a personally touching track entitled "Hollow Breath" which was a tribute/message to his deceased father, Michael A. Symons. Another track which gained much attention was the potent ".poetic.mathematics." and his infamous spoken word outro in which he used background music from the movie "Requiem For A Dream".
He is a pioneer...with his poetic showmanship, passion, and honesty. He had the courage, or some might say "balls", to get up in front of an audience and introduce them to hip-hop in a area where hip-hop was definitely NOT accepted; nor a "normal" thing to hear in a bar or any venue at that. After a few years of recording and performing, he took some down time to work on more music, write, and then began painting a random collection that he entitles: the j. symons collection.
In the last few years, he has continously worked to 'perfect' his craft and recorded such songs such as "Clock Beat", "Livin the Life", "tHERapy", "WHAT WE DO", "to Make it", "be coming soon sUn", and others.
.syms. is currently working on many new projects. A new album is being recorded along with solitaryscience, which will include a lot of spoken word tracks backed by the instrumental music he's been working on for the last 5 years. Web/Graphic Design (j. symons design; www.jsymonsdesign.com) has also taken up a lot of his time; everything from CD covers to print advertising. He also continues to create unique abstract paintings and has taken his love for painting to a new level by creating custom designed shirts.
With a variety of creative outlets, he hopes the blend of his creativity will someday be displayed in all forms of media and inspire all to continue to create and be expressive.
