Steve Ocean went looking for his father in Memphis when he stumbled into a wild bar and came across Stephen Wild singing with his guitar behind a sheild of chicken wire. Ocean was impressed with Wild. The two talked for a while and decided to head for the west coast and play music together. On their travels they picked up a hitchhiker along the 101, Ro Free, who was on the tail end of a vision quest. The three of them became inseparable.
