Princess Chelsea is a female composer and recording artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. She is somewhere between the ages of 16 -24.
Princess Chelsea is part of this new breed of control-freak bedroom producers - presented to us in the form of a happy and bubbly girl.
In 2008, Princess Chelsea sat in her bedroom for a year and set about recording her very first album.
Sometimes she would record old compositions stored in her head - (‘Ice Reign’, ‘Monkey Eats Bananas’, ‘Positive Guy Meets Negative Man’). Sometimes a song would hit her in a flash and she would rush to record it (‘Frack’, ‘Machines of Loving Grace’, ‘The Cigarette Duet’). Sometimes she would create a song as she recorded it (‘Yulia’, ‘Overseas’, ‘Caution Repetitive’). Sometimes she would blatantly rip off a song that she loved (‘Too Fast to Live’). Sometimes all of the above (‘Stay Away From That Loser’).
Princess Chelsea describes her album as “chronicling my experiences growing up as a teenager and young adult in New Zealandâ€. It plays like a musical. Everyday situations of love, loss and petty jealousies, are presented to us as a sort of bizarre laymans fairy tale. When a story requires more than one story-teller guests are called in (duets with Jonathan Bree (The Brunettes), James Milne (Lawrence Arabia)). Think Les Mis meets classic Disney meets Philip Glass.
Harps, Glockenspiels, Xylophones (yes there is a distinction), Bells, Strings, Synths, Guitars, Accordions, Horns - are all very carefully arranged and layered - dropping in and out. Melodies and counter melodies are presented individually - then gradually combined, often culminating in a glorious finale of sorts (see ‘Frack’ , ‘Overseas’, ‘Yulia’, ‘Monkey Eats Bananas’, ‘Ice Reign’).
The juxtaposition of this well - pretty music, coupled with the Princess’ witty array of sharp social commentaries makes for an intriguing listen and is in keeping with a young woman who has been described as “impossibly cute†at the same time as being labelled “well, a bitchâ€.
Infact, one cant help but wonder if all this “princess†carry-on is some sort of piss take on the music industry’s manufactured maidens (think Hannah Montanna!) - humurous because the ‘starlet’ in this case is the producer. Or maybe it’s just some kind of in-joke.
Whatever the case - it seems that behind this guise of bobby sox and wide-eyed innocence lies a more mature individual.
An assortment of leaked crowning glories have already bedazzled those inside the World Wide Web.
Rolling Stone has called her work ‘absolutely sublime’. It has otherwise been described as ‘unique, eerie and ethereal’ or as ‘if Yann Tiersen composed the music for the next Wes Anderson film'.
Experience the magic through Lil’ Chief Records soon.
Princess Chelsea is also a member of "Auckland's best loved, theatrical and over-the-top, fun, fanatic and fantastical band" - TeenWolf, and "New Zealand's hardest working band" -The Brunettes.
