Yea Yea Doin' It Big! Itz the Livest DJ in the Carolinaz pumpin through ya speakaz---
The Birth of DJ DexIt all started when I was a child watching DJ Jazzy Jeff mixing with Will Smith back in the ‘90s. The way he was cuttin’ up the record caught my eye and my interest was spawned. From there I began researching equipment in the industry. About that time, my uncle blessed me with my first pair of Technic 1200s. After more than a year of diligent practicing I was ready to venture into the dj scene. I began to dj college parties in the Atlanta area. Shortly there after, the Lord led my father to pastor in Charleston, South Carolina and my up-and-coming business journeyed there as well.
About the time we moved to Charleston, my father started to have concerns about the records I was bringing home to practice my djing. He sat me down and cautioned me that my choices were not in line with his expectations. He challenged me that a real dj could dj anything and suggested I work with gospel music. Initially I was not fond of the idea, but I decided to step up to the challenge. With his help we came up with the pseudo name “DJ Dex†and the steps of my gospel career began to take form.
In Charleston, my sister started listening to the gospel radio station, 106.3 WJNI, and heard the radio personality Brian Seabrook. She later met Brian and decided to introduce me as well. Soon, he became like a mentor for me concerning the workings of the radio business and the engineering aspects. Within a year, my radio career was beginning to show promise. They hired me to create a show designed to draw young people in the area, and with the guidance of Cliff Fletcher I created the hip-hop gospel show, CLUB 3:16. With me as the host dj, the show aired live on Saturday nights for five years and helped to boost the gospel hip-hop culture in the Charleston area.
As an on-air personality my popularity in the Charleston area exploded. DJ Dex had become a regular name in the local churches and gospel scene. I was rated the #1 gospel dj in Charleston. I began opening for well known artists including Canton Jones, Platinum Souls, Lil iRocc, Cross Movement and Da’ Fam. For the last three years I have also been the dj for Crunkfest, a local hip-hop gospel event that draws more than 5,000 people annually. In addition, I will also be djing in Atlanta at the upcoming Holy Hip-Hop Awards.
Currently I am employed at Citadel Broadcasting/ WXTC Heaven 1390AM where I am a program director as well as a remote dj. On Heaven 1390 I also host the show Crunk for Christ, a hip-hop gospel program that airs on Friday and Saturday nights.
I know I am blessed to have gained such exposure at such a young age. God has vast plans for me and I intend to be a willing and available vessel. My vision is to take back the youth from the hands of the enemy. I will touch lives through creative mixes and exclusive gospel artists. Ultimately, however, it is my vision to translate the Word of God into the hip-hop style to reach many generations. From youth to college students and even on to adults, my gospel hip-hop mixes are designed to get them crunk for Christ. Those who were moved by the nature of hip-hop in the world, after salvation, can still enjoy the style of music with words that glorify God.
It is a blessing to see how God is moving within the gospel hip-hop industry. I am excited to be a part of the movement which reaches out and touches young people within a culture they are familiar. Souls are being saved as people open their hearts and their minds to this new genre of gospel music.
