The Outskirts of Infinity impressed me greatly. I have heard a few bands and guitarists, labelled as ‘Hendrix like’ but the lead guitarist Bari Watts, was the first to actually fulfil this description so well, he was superb! Easily one of the best guitarists I have seen for a very long time....OUTSKIRTS OF INFINITY TRACK "BURNING DOWN".. FEATURED ON CD WITH OCTOBER 2008 EDITION OF "CLASSIC ROCK" MAGAZINE!
The Outskirts of Infinity are a British Psychedelic trio who have been boiling away since the eighties. Their sound is a Hendrix scream of fuzz, flower power and syrupy acid blues, created to blow minds and wig-out squares.
Guitarist Bari Watts is their not-so-secret weapon, his freely-freaking axe is a riot of Purple Haze and Creamy slashing. The Outskirts are reportedly so good live that clean shaven punters spontaneously sprout weird beards and UFOs crash into the concessions. In fact that's what Burning Down is about, crashing UFOs and LSD and Stoner Hippy Chicks..Just go with it Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE OUTSKIRTS OF INFINITY ARE THE HEADLINING ACT FRIDAY 24TH APRIL AT THE ROADBURN FESTIVAL TILBURG HOLLAND.ROADBURN 2009.
I had never seen Outskirts of Infinity but I own all the records and all the Bari Watts solo material as well. I was pretty blown away as after a few songs he really was spot on and killing it on the guitar. We got to hear some classics like Eyes in the Back of my Head, Fire, Gemini Machine, Stoned Crazy, Lord of the Dark Skies with a long solo. They had some malfunction with the security system to the bright white fluorescent lights were on the whole set and you could not really see the visuals and this clearly annoyed the band as well. In the end, Bari smashed one of his hand painted strats and threw it out into the audience!V39 Club Roadburn 2009.
I ran off to the V39 for Outskirts of Infinity and I would stay here until the very end. I missed the opening 25 min Roadburn jam, I am told. I hung out with Jacob from Causa Sui for most of the set. He was also pretty blown away by these guys. They played the most intense jamming you could imagine with 20 min guitar solos, etc… they played Politician, All in your Mind and Sunshine of your Love with a 25 min guitar solo at the end that was unreal. Never seen anyone ever play the guitar like that before. He also played Voodoo Chile, Foxy lady, Spanish Castle Magic, and ended the show with Stoned Crazy, The audience was blown to pieces. Best band of the day for sure… Pity those who missed this…!!Roadburn V39 Club 2009.
I wobbled over to see outskirts of infinity which was like stepping back into the late sixty's stunning long solos jamming classic shit and with the added smoke i was at woodstock!!!!!The Outskirts Of Infinity are a Classic Rock Trio from the UK, and were one of the earliest bands to release an album on Nick Saloman's Woronzow Label.
Nick himself played Bass with the band on the first two albums. The Outskirts first album "Lord Of The Dark Skies" was one of the best on the label, with epic slabs of progressive rock and soaring guitar. The second album "Scenes From The Dreams of Angels" is a combination of extremely hallucinogenic space rock, Hendrix-like power trio stuff and psychedelic pop.
The third album "Stoned Crazy" was recorded live in the studio featuring a combination of the Outskirts own songs plus a few cover versions of Hendrix and Cream numbers. This was the first album to feature ex Ozzy Osbourne/Dirty Tricks Bass Player Terry Horbury. Horbury's Jack Bruce style Bass playing in combination with Drummer Ric Gunther's Bonham/Baker drum style pushed the trio up a gear in power and creativity live.
The next release "The Altar Of The Elements" showed a distinct improvement over its predecessor, this featured the hard rocking "Man Of Words" and the strange "Broken Wings" an epic Floyd style track. The title track is a superb heavy prog workout with spectacular guitar playing.
Following on from this release came "Incident At Pilatus" recorded in the middle of a european tour. Three of the tracks were recorded in a studio in Switzerland and the rest live at various venues during the tour.
The Band are now looking for gigs in the UK and abroad.
THE OUTSKIRTS OF INFINITY ARE BACK!..ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?INCIDENT AT PILATUS.
Bari Watts has got to be one of the most amazing and criminally unknown guitarists to stroll this swirling green earth. Bari is (in my mind) among the greatest psychedelic guitarists of all time. This album (yes, I still call 'em albums) is a veritable feast for the cerebral cortex and ears of the connoisseur of full-throttle instrumental guitar freak-outs. Essentially a series of jams, this is not idle noodling, but ripping good stuff by one of the foremost trios of modern psychedelia (Bari Watts - guitar; Ric Gunther - drums; Terry Horbury - bass). Bari's playing is deeply steeped in the astral sonic explorations of Jimi Hendrix (hello - they ARE named the Outskirts of Infinity!!!!). That said, this is far from derivative, and more in the spirit of all that I love about full fledged abandon to the muse of beautifully powerful psychedelia. This is not hard or mellow - just wild.....I've got a wild mind....and I dig the way these cat's caress the deep recesses of my blissed-out grey matter. It ain't hi fidelity stuff, but it sure is high something......
If you are a psycho-delic guitar freak then you owe it to yourself to find a copy of this and everything else that these fine gentlemen play. If you are looking for sweet little toe-tapping ditties or the latest tripe from some American Bridle wanna-be singer, then y'all are a long way from home podner....but if you are looking for some rich, pulsating, brain-teasingly wild guitaristy that explores the outskirts of infinity, then come on in....pull up a cushion and dig. It may not be a 'new" sound, but it still sounds fresh and oh-so-live to my earholes. Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Hazel, Nick Saloman, Bari Watts - these are my psychedelic guitar heroes.... let it rip....increase the peace.
