Spirit is, so I AM a lover of my husband, family and friends / a reader of all things that are genuine and connected / an ear for good music of any genre / a persuaded Carolina Basketball fan / a critical thinker / an idea generator / a good laugh craver / a dancer / a poet / a cook / a woman / a human / Spirit.Danielle Drake-Burnette previously known on stage as SoulsJourney is a writer / spoken word artist originally from Los Angeles, CA currently residing in Oakland. She began writing in 1998 and began performing poetry before audiences in August of 2001. Since then she has taken the world of spoken word by storm becoming a member of the 2002 Oakland Poetry Slam team in her first year performing poetry.She has performed in “Sauce,” a production directed and choreographed by UC Davis MFA graduate, Ecsailama Artry-Diof, and was selected as one of five Bay Area poets to compete in the Hottest Poets Competition in New York. In 2003 Danielle was selected as the Oakland Poetry Slam Champion, and along with members of the 2003 Oakland Poetry Slam Team, went on to place 4th in the nation in the National Poetry Slam. She has featured at poetry venues throughout the bay area, performed at the 2003 and 2004 Radical Performance Fest, at the 2003 and 2004 Bioneers Conference and at the Techno Cosmic Mass. In 2005 Danielle was a featured poet at the “Awakening the Energy for Change: the Black Madonna and the Womb of God" June 18, 2005, Graduate Theological Union Summer Session, Berkeley, California. She has additionally self-published a chapbook entitled “Parable of a Journey.”Danielle completed one year towards an MFA in Creative Writing for Poetry at San Francisco State University. She also participates with several community organizations including Pivotal Point Youth Services, Poets for Global Justice and has completed a manuscript titled: Cast Iron Life: a collection of poems and recipes.

people / organizations that provide services and advocate for youth, publishing companies interested in a quality poetry manuscript, people who are interested in seeing all people become their best selves, and if you can do any of this through words, art, music, food, or dance, then I really want to meet you

Music:

I love Jill Scott particularly her first album Who Is... it speaks to my soul then and now, anything by Fertile Ground, deep soulful house, good chantin' reggae & dancehall (especially Sister Carol and Barrington Levy), Donny Hathaway, Erykah Badu, Ms. Hill, N'dambi, Lalah Hathaway, Cree Summer, Anthony Hamilton and anyone who has a beautiful voice. Shouts out to indie artists: Ledisi, ScoripioBlues, Sparlha Swa, Gabrilla Ballard, Khalil, Peven Everett, Janelle Monae and on....

Movies:

All time favorite shows: A Different World & The Office (British Version)-- Favorite shows on now: Entourage, Weeds, In Treatment, October Road and the whole VH1 Soul Channel (that I can't get because DirecTv refuses to subscribe to it despite my numerous requests).

Hip Hop Honors

I watched the VH1 Hip Hop Honors and I was disappointed that they didn't do a tribute to Salt N Pepa.  For women my age...they defined feminity and strength in hip hop, and "What a Man" was ...
