ARTS and MUSIC education, experiential learning and a place to vent and voice what they are feeling or thinking, all while being involved in a mentorship program (the center acts as the mentorship). Our vision is a center somewhere in or around Detroit that serves children of all ages. By giving them insight on things that they are not usually given the chance to experience and providing a safe and secure environment that’s reason for being is to teach them how to express themselves creatively. We envision an old large Victorian Home. In every room there is a place for the children to learn with a mentor or teach themselves different means of expression. There will be a music chamber to sit and listen (meditate and reflect), an artist studio (several) with lockers and private “cubicles†for each of our artists to call their own, providing a sense of ownership to the experience for them. There will be daily classes offered by local artists and merchants who volunteer to come and offer classes on a regular schedule. Imagine weekly “BELIEF CLASSES†inspiring thoughts of endless possibility to minds that are caught in “Survival Modeâ€. The center will also serve as a retreat and “healing†center for artists from the community who serve as mentors for the children who participate in this program. With weekly events and discussion forums, a café (part of the kitchen and dining area) we will provide a social aspect to the DISCAS that engages both the participants and the volunteers in conversation and recreation. This is the vision. The goal. And it starts happening NOW. With you reading this letter This letter is an open invitation for you to help us make this center a reality. While the location of the center has not come yet, the inspiration to go forward with the action is here and as is the effort to make it come to fruition. All the legal and registration work has been set in place, and now is the time to call on you, the people of the community who BELIEVE that change is not only possible, it is mandatory. The first phase of this program is pretty simple. Make people aware of what we are doing and then ask them to help with a small contribution in exchange for something that benefits them. We are looking for businesses and individuals who are interested in making a sponsorship contribution of $50 or more and in return they will receive advertising space in the monthly circular “indiescriptâ€. Indiescript is a newsletter and internet based magazine whose mission is to provide artists, musicians, community activists, independent business and others with articles and profiles that will help promote their efforts to as many people as possible. The idea is to create a bridge between the efforts of the DISCAS with the needs of those who support what we are creating.
