Maple Minutes

About Me

In 1986, WQBR air personality "Mod Maid" debuted the very first "Mod Maid’s Mighty Maple Minutes at Midnight.” What can we say; they liked alliteration in the 80’s! Mod Maid, better known as Leah Miller, was a fan of Canadian bands from listening to Canadian Content on border Detroit radio stations like CKLW, CHYR and OHM-FM. Each year as a teen, she would travel to London, Ontario to pick up new Canadian LPs. Her collection became the show in her second semester of her freshman year at Eastern Michigan University.

In 1987, Leah transferred to Arizona State University and somehow convinced the program director (who fortunately was from Michigan) that Arizona needed a little Canada. The show continued until 1991 on KASR/KASC. Many artists passed through the original Maple Minutes from Glass Tiger, to Honeymoon Suite to the Grapes of Wrath.

Fast forward to 1999, Leah was now an air personality on Phoenix’s KZON. An old pal from her KUKQ days, Andrew Boyer, sends her a copy of "Beautiful Midnight" by the Matthew Good Band to play on her Late Night Drive-Thru program. They begin discussing how many Canadian bands they both like. Andrew even takes Leah to Vancouver to see Matthew Good! The following year, Leah becomes the Advisor for her former college radio station, KASC "The Blaze". Some students encourage her to bring back the Maple Minutes to the KASC airwaves. Leah asks Andrew to guest a few times and now he is a co-host! They each bring a very separate, unique knowledge of the Canadian music landscape. They like to call it a Canadian Music Magazine on radio. The Maple Minutes airs Thursday on www.theblaze1260.com at 2pm mst...
