Phoebus' Jones commits to VMI Two-way lineman Charlie Jones becomes the sixth Phoebus player this year to commit to a Division I program. By DAVE JOHNSON | ¦ 247-4649 January 23, 2009 Phoebus lineman Charlie Jones, an All-Peninsula District and All-Eastern Region pick on both sides of the ball, has committed to Virginia Military Institute.Jones chose the Keydets Tuesday as head coach Sparky Woods visited his home. Jones, 6-foot-1 and 250 pounds, said he was recruited by VMI as a defensive end."When I started looking at colleges, I wanted a college that is great academically and pretty good in football," Jones said. "VMI is a great educational school and I should be able to get early playing time there."They've been in (my) top three all along, and they've been calling me pretty much every week. They've stayed with me this whole year." While some VMI freshmen have difficulty with the military adjustment, Jones has something of a head start in that department. His mother, Katherine Baines, is a retired master sergeant in the Air Force.Jones becomes the sixth player off Phoebus' 2008 Group AAA Division 5 championship team to commit to a Division I program. The others are lineman Dominik Davenport (West Virginia), running back Shawne Alston (West Virginia), linebacker LoVante' Battle (Virginia), cornerback Markell Wilkins (Old Dominion) and defensive end Demetrius Ward (Liberty).Quarterback Tajh Boyd, one of the top uncommitted prospects in the nation, will be the seventh when he makes his choice, which could come as early as Friday."Playing for Coach (Bill) Dee and the tradition here at Phoebus, I knew I had a pretty good chance of getting a scholarship somewhere," Jones said.
