I am here for Friends

About Me

My name's Joe, and I'm 19. I'm from Steubenville, Ohio, the nation's fastest declining city. That is a laudable distinction. Now, I live in Columbus, Ohio where I study at the Ohio State University. I am majoring in Business Administration with a specialization in economics, and I am minoring in Spanish and possibly CSE. I have a large family (by this generation's standards), including three brothers and two sisters. My whole family is wonderful and eclectic in their personalities. It's like socializing with a microcosm of the world's people. I have decided to make Columbus my permament home, leasing out an efficiency for myself and deciding to take classes for this Summer quarter as well. I will also be painting dorm rooms full time. I would say the best way to describe myself is that I am someone who works hard, wants to learn, and cares about humanity. It disturbs me that in the 21st century, there are still more nations with corrupt governments, crumbling infrastructure, and stark education inequity than there are those with functional governments, improving infrastructure, and education equity. My biggest hope is that the speed of telecommunications and the internet, which has fostered globalization, will continue to bring people closer together to ameliorate the large global issues of our day: lack of clean water and air, lack of education, lack of healthcare, government corruption, intolerance, and the HIV epidemic. There is still a major social issue--among others--at stake in the world: GLBTQI rights. The gay community is still one of the most virulently discriminated groups in the world. In many countries (and US states), homosexual sex is still illegal. GLBT couples cannot share health insurance, property rights, tax filings, child custody, and power of attorney. A man's husband/partner of forty years has no more say over his deceased body than a stranger. But that will change. But it takes everyone to play an individual role to bring change.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

you, your best friend and your dog, and anyone who cares.

A New Year, Again.

Dare I say that 2007 passed us quickly.  It seems like I wrote that blog before the beginning of this year such a short time ago.  Apparently, it was nearly a year ago.  What a year thi...

The Greatest Non-Conspiracy of Our Time

With gas prices rapidly rising from their winter lows, people are frustrated when it takes $35 to fill a small Honda and $65 to fill a van, SUV, or truck.  Frustration always seems to lead to ang...

Class of 2007, Wear Sunscreen.

I've always thought this a valuable song, which was actually based on a 1997 column written by Mary Schmich.  I have modified it to make it more appropriate for our class by, uh, replacing the 9 ...

What I surmise about graduation

Graduating from high school is surreal because I have been dreaming of this moment for four years, contemplating how I'd best run out of the school and never look at it again.  Now, I still feel ...

Why Professor Cray-Go is an Idiot: UPDATED!

Isn't she.  Well, it's obvious that she is; however, most of the students in her sociology classes just accept it as fact, tantamount to accepting that oxygen keeps us alive but never really know...

No one cares?

For a comment on my global warming blog entry, my younger brother's friend was quick to point out that no one would read or care about global warming and global climate change. That's shit that adult...

Sometimes It's Society, Sometimes It's Personal

Yes, many times I discuss things like climate change and other seemingly boring topics like that, but this blog entry has a personal tone to it   As a senior, considering the fact t...

Life's been good so far

I was thinking today that, you know, life's been good so far.  Everyday I learn more and more and see the mistakes I've made in the past, and that's great.  I would hate to alw...
