What it is about me? Well, I am a fashion designer in the traditional sense...I attended design school-blah, blah, blah! I worked in the industry-blah, blah, blah! Why the new label? Is Nizhoni Way Apparel no more?
HA! You wish designer wanna-bes..
I am not a knock-off artist nor do I make copies of other designers outfits, put them on the runway and call them my own. My designs are original and have been knocked off by others-which doesn't bother me because knowing that they include my designs along with their Dolce & Gabbana knock-offs is practically saying your a great designer...I can deal with that!
Where did you get the idea for DKC*fx and what is the concept?..
Well, without sounding like a business proposal-which this is not and some people think I owe them one for some reason--get over yourselves! The label name came from my design school days when I was working as a freelance designer in Los Angeles. It was a label I went under when I was designing for a friend of mine who worked behind the scenes in the film industry. She was on a strict budget-as we all were-and could not afford business attire. So, I offered to design a couple of pieces. We went downtown to the garment district and bought bolts of fabrics and I spent a solid month designing her career wardrobe. Well, the end results were pretty amazing and she sported them with great confidence. She told me that she felt every bit the mogul she aspired to be! She told me that my designs were like the "FX's (effects-as in special, but not the kind of "special" I reserve for my competitors)" from a movie. That's where the label name came from. "DKC" are the initials of my name and "FX" come from the film industry term, special effects. The concept is that DKC*fx transforms the person wearing my designs into whom ever they choose to be. My designs inspire confidence!
DKC*fx is the polar opposite of the more reserved. I use to design for all sorts in Los Angeles: Go-Go Boys, Go-Go Girls, and the people who kept them. As Ashley Paige told me once:
"Someone else can design for the housewives. You can design for the mistresses!"..
