The beginnings of the band can be traced back to the year 2001. A 4-piece at that time that was heavily influenced by the blooming Omaha, NE music scene based around the saddle creek label. The personal core of the band consisted of Eva Flacke (bass, vocals) and Gordon Kemper (guitar) who went through various guitar-players and drummers. In that process the music they played kept changing and grew into something more and more their own.
By 2004 Song and Dance had found a pretty steady line up featuring Gerd Schmidt (guitar) and Florian Kochinke (drums). With these two involved live performances happened more often and plans of putting out a record became more focused. Fall and winter 2004 found the band recording a demo and shortly after that an 8-song album. The process of recording was long and nerve-wrecking but led to good results.
“The inner stageâ€, was released on cd and 180g vinyl by Coraille in January 2005. Following the release of the album the band went on a two week road trip in February and march which despite the cold weather helped the band grow as a unit and as live musicians.
Shortly after the tour however Gerd decided to quit and head to Guatemala instead. A substitute was found quickly as a long time friend of the group who had occasionally played extra bass on one of their songs joined on guitar. Having played a bunch of gigs with them Philip Rau is now a full member of the band.
Plans for the future include more touring and possibly the release of a new ep in early 2006, on Coraille again.
It’s seems hard to describe the bands current sound. Comparisons that get thrown around when people talk or write about Song and Dance range from Q and not U to Sleater Kinney, from Björk to Sonic Youth or even Fugazi.
Many think the bands music is too complex, noisy and complicated. Well, it certainly requires some thought and attention, but that should not scare you away. And, anyway, they have some catchy moments too.
You should probably listen to them yourself.
