About Me

MyGen Profile GeneratorKIRK LATIMER:The scar on his forearm tells you where he's from and where he's going. A teacher, writer and acting coach with more passion than there is room in his body. Though he busts at the seams from time to time, his ever-giving wife, students, poet-friend Gabe and energy keep him from falling apart. With a soon-to-be-completed graduate degree in Educational Leadership from WMU, old boxing instincts from downtown Detroit bouts, and interests in all things occult, he meanders from day to day. His book five years in the making weighs more than his ego, and his teaching position soaks more life out of him than ever should be allowed by law. Regardless, he loves every minute of it.GABRIEL GIRON:By the time he was nineteen Gabriel already had a wealth of knowledge about the world around him having lived in three different countries and six US states. After high school, Gabriel joined the Army only to be later diagnosed with stage 3B testicular cancer. He then spent the next three years in Washington D.C. fighting for his life, reevaluating his choices, and finding a laugh in every moment. Four years and an honorable discharge later, Gabriel enrolled at WMU, where he graduated with a Film, Video, Media Studies major. Gabriel is currently working with far too expensive film equipment as he explores the realm of independent film. And his creative energy garnered him the title of Kalamazoo’s 2006 Poetry Slam Champion. His style comes from looking at his poetry as therapy and trying to make himself as vulnerable as possible when he writes.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.kineticaffect.com
Band Members: Gabriel Giron & Kirk Latimer
Influences: By combining Kirk's experiences as a teacher, suicide awareness speaker, forensics coach and writer with Gabe's experiences in the military, his troubled youth and cancer survival, we have created an artistic endeavor that cannot be easily labeled, or neatly packaged in a box. By letting down our guard and sharing our endless collection of stories through the art of spoken word, we have been able to connect with audiences from Christian colleges to Liberal art houses. This has led us to create a new artistic endeavor, called the Kinetic Affect, which applies motive force through the voice to move and stir audience members and promote positive change in individuals and communities.
Sounds Like: Taking spoken word poetry to the next level, Kirk and Gabriel are two of the most highly impacting spoken word performers in the nation. With a hip-hop edge, academic literary flare and a whole lot of passion, their poetry cannot be said to sound like anything you've ever heard before. With their performances described as "deeply moving,” “like nothing I’ve ever seen,” and even “gut wrenching," Kinetic Affect aims to create an experience that cannot easily be put into words. This is not yesterday's poetry show. This is not a slam competition. This is the Kinetic Affect, something so new, fresh and dynamic that words cannot describe the impact a live performance is bound to have on you."Whispers"
