"THEM GUYS"
That One Guy, JAMAL HURSE, severly deaf since birth, is an artist with 35 years in music, with a collection of his solo Bass Improvisations released on CD ("Follow Your Bliss" 2005). Possessing a unique and controversial concept of what the role of the Electric Bass Guitar should be in music, Jamal takes the Bass out of its normally accepted place as strictly a part of the rythm section.
This writer acknowledges that, although this has been done before by players such as Manring, Wooten, Pastorius, etc, Jamal has ventured into a musical landscape that is uniquely his own. As Bassist/Producer/Composer/Writer, Brent-Anthony Johnson, has stated: "Lovers of Percy Jones, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and/or the earlier works of Dann Glenn will really dig Jamal’s approach to the electric bass guitar – as well as his singular journey to a musical world shown to far too few."
Even with a promising future as a Solo Instrumentalist, Jamal chose to not "go it alone". After 15 years of playing solo, he began to seek out other musicians, to share this adventure into uncharted territory.
The Other Guy, ANGELO PERFILLI, is a powerful Drummer, originally from Olympia, WA, and has been pounding on the skins since he was 8 years old. Angelo (AKA "The Hurricane" or "The Angelator"), grew up in a musical household (his Father has a 4 octave Operatic vocal range), chose the drums for his instrument because he was hyper, and "loved beating the shit outta things". His official training began when he was 10, studying Music Theory and even Lettering in Music in high school. While he participated in these music programs, Angelo had the opportunity to 'borrow' percussion instruments from his high school...and he took great advantage of it. Anytime something was needed, it would more than likely be found at Angelo's home. Having played in numerous bands as both a drummer & a vocalist, his musical styles run the gamut, from heavy Classical, Jazz/Rock Fusion, and Progressive Rock. Inspiration is found in his heros, legendary drummers, like Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, and Neil Peart.
While talking with Mr. Perfilli, he told me that he even likes the Beatles, thanks his Mom for buying his first drumset & new additions every year since. In regards to musical goals, Angelo desires to be voted Modern Drummer Magazine's"Best Rock Drummer" and to be co-interviewed with Neil Peart. When I asked Angelo "Why THEM GUYS ?", he said "Portland is a town of musicians, none of them serious. These guys are serious and I can express my drumming the way I want to."
It was quite clear from the very Beginning for Them Guys that this would be no ordinary combination. From the time those primordial notes were in the air, the formula for a new type of musical explosion was created. In the opinion of this writer, the evolution of this living musical being has just begun, and it is going to be an exciting ride watching it mature. The chemistry between Them Guys is amazing, and has a viral, infectious quality to it, passing easily from Them into the audience. Once you catch it, you may discover that you don't want to stop riding the waves as they crash over you, enjoying every musically delicious heavy groove and beat that fuses together with airy cymbal washes & bells, creating a truly new aural experience.
