Nobu Stowe (Nobuyoshi Suto) was born in Maebashi, Gunma , Japan . He started taking piano lessons at age 3 and composition at age 6. One of his notable early activities was with a progressive rock trio, PALE GHOSTS, that he formed while attending Maebashi High School. The music of PALE GHOSTS was reminiscent of Progressive/Symphonic Rock of '70s, especially that from Italy. The trio was offered several recording contracts, although Stowe's departure to the US resulted in its eventual dissolution. However, Stowe plans to reform PALE GHOSTS in near future with original members, Takashi Kanai and Honyo Ohte. Ohte, as a talented illustrator, has designed covers for all of Stowe's leader/co-leader albums.
After graduating from the high school, Stowe moved to the US to study Music (composition) and Psychology at University of California, Berkeley . He then moved to Chicago to pursue graduate studies at University of Chicago . After receiving Ph.D. in Psychology, he moved to Baltimore to work as a ‘drug researcher’ for National Institute of Health . Since this relocation, Stowe is leading the post-fusion unit TRIO RICOCHET and, in less than a year, had already appeared at the top venues in the East Coast including Blue Note N.Y., The Knitting Factory, The 55 Bar and An die Musik.
Besides TRIO RICOCHET , Stowe leads and co-leads various projects exploring and blending ‘total-improvisation’ (a la Keith Jarrett) and ‘free-improvisation’. These include STOWE-PEMBLETON PROJECT , solo, duos with Alan Munshower , Vytis Nivinskas & Honyo Ohte, and various collaborations with the top NY free-improvisers, including Blaise Siwula , Dom Minasi , Bern Nix, Ross Bonadonna, Ray Sage & John McLellan as well as the tabla master Badal Roy . Stowe is the pianist for RENAISSANCE TRIO lead by the renowned Italian percussionist/composer, Andrea Centazzo , and the clarinet legend, Perry Robinson .
Starting in December 2006, Stowe has already released 4 albums: BROOKLYN MOMENTS and NEW YORK MOMENTS on Konnex (Germany), THE SOUL IN THE MIST on Ictus (USA/Italy), and HOMMAGE AN KLAUS KINSKI and AN DIE MUSIK on Soul Note (Italy). These will be soon followed by CONFUSION BLEUE on Soul Note (due Feb 2009).
Stowe is the leader/co-leader of all the above albums, except THE SOUL IN THE MIST by RENAISSANCE TRIO . Stowe has produced all of his leader/co-leader projects plus a recent session featuring Borah Bergman, Ray Sage, Perry Robinson and Steve Swell.
Stowe regularly publishes columns and interviews (including ones with Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Bill Frisell ), Michel Legrand, Marilyn Crispell, Tomasz Stanko, Billy Harper, and Martial Solal to JAZZ TOKYO , the influential web/mobile-zine in Japan.
Stowe has won two performance grants from Hirshhorn Museum & The Sculpture Garden of Smithonian Institute and has been featured on CODA (Canada), Cuadernos de Jazz (Spain), Toma Jazz (Spain), Jazz Colou(u)rs (Italy), Jazz.Pt (Portugal), and Jazz Tokyo (Japan).
