Guy Pinney, Tommy Ratchford, Forrest Higgins, Jim Roark. If you were into the band scene in Pensacola in the 60’s, these names will mean something to you. They were all at one time or another members of THE LAYMEN, one of the hottest rock bands to ever come from the Gulf Coast. THE LAYMEN was a consistent winner at the “Battle of the Bands†that occasionally took place at local venues such as Fireman’s Hall, Grotto Hall, and the National Guard Armory. There was always a dance on Fridays after the football games at Fireman’s Hall during the season. In the spring, The National Guard Armory was the place to go. In the summer, everyone went to “The Place†on Pensacola Beach. When the LAYMEN were playing, one could be sure of a packed house. Every member of the band was an accomplished musician and performer.Forty years have passed since those halcyon days of the 60’s. Bellbottom jeans, tie-dyed shirts and peace symbols are seldom, if ever, seen nowadays, but you can still enjoy the music of the 60’s; and better yet, you can even hear it made by the same people (almost) who made it for you back then!!Pinney, Ratchford, Higgins and Roark have re-formed the band along with three additions, Roger Agerton on bass guitar, Jason Balbuena, on drums, and Patsy Roark instead of Suzy Storm as the female vocalist. The “new†LAYMEN (which the band refers to as THE LAYMEN (again!) still play those great 60’s songs the way they were meant to be played.
