The Fraternity was formally organized on November 19, 1920 in a meeting held at the Metropolitan Restaurant in Intramuros. Four months later, on March 24, 1921, the Greek letters Î¥----, standing for University Students Fraternity, were formally adopted.During its early years, the Upsilon was fortunate to have officers imbued with a deep sense of responsibility and members who supported their leaders at every turn. The Fraternity set precedents which were zealously followed by succeeding groups. It made a name for its outstanding involvement in campus affairs and for the exacting moral requirements before an applicant could enter its exclusive roster. The Upsilon encouraged scholarship and cultural discernment among its members and the whole student body. With a strong discipline, it was able to initiate and manage worthwhile activities, which made it a major force on campus. It extended its interests beyond campus to include national issues of the day, notably the attainment of Philippine independence. The Upsilon also organized militant actions against encroachment on the rights of the people and corruption in public offices.Members of the Upsilon Sigma Phi are molded to be men with strength of character, a keen awareness of what is morally right and wrong, and who adhere to the principles of fairness, honesty, sincerity and honor in all actions and decisions. It is thus not surprising that several Upsilonians gave up their lives for the nation such as Jose Abad Santos, Wenceslao Q. Vinzons and Agapito A. del Rosario-- all of whom were executed during the Second World War; Melito T. Glor and Merardo T. Arce, who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of social justice and real reforms; and Benigno “Ninoy†Aquino Jr., living up to his declaration that “the Filipino is worth dying for.â€Throughout our history, from the scholarly decisions penned by the likes of Florentino P. Feliciano, Jose C. Campos Jr. and Emilio A. Gancayco, and the journalistic prowess of Armando J. Malay, to the electrifying speeches of Joker P. Arroyo during the impeachment trial of President Estrada, and even to this very day, Upsilonians continue to manifest strength of character.
