Roby Perissin Myspace music web page - (PROFILO ITALIANO SOPRA/Profile in Italian above)
If you are reading this, it' s probably because you are interested to know a little bit about me and my music background, if not, just don' t read on and do something else, because it is a long text and probably boring to you.
My professional music webpage can be visited by clicking on www.robyperissin.com
On Myspace, this website, you can find amazing, great musicians, others not as great, others OK, so and so, etc....a bit of everything....., therefore let me say right away that I am not a great musician, but just a good, solid musician, at least that' s what people tell me, unless they are lying to me just because I am nice guy.....;-).
I don' t play 5 or 6 or 8 strings basses like the many "virtuoso" that we see or hear around (some really are, some think they are.....), I simply play the good old fashioned 4 strings instrument but in all forms and types of basses : electric bass, acoustic bass, fretted and fretless, upright electric, acoustic double bass, "just" the 4 strings instruments.
Had I ONLY played music in my life, I may have become, perhaps, eventually, a great musician but because ONLY just playing music often doesn' t exactly make you live comfortably (with exceptions of course), at least in Italy, and allow you to pay all your bills at the end of the month...... I have done other things too in my life. Also I don' t write music nor am a lead vocalist, which decreases the chances to make a living in this business.... so I am "just" a bass player and I love it.
But music is what I enjoy the most doing and I put my time, heart and soul in it, it has a very important place in my life.
If I wasn' t by now at least a good, decent musician, with all I have been playing in my life all over the world and the time I put into it in the last 30+ years I have been playing music, I would be stupid and I should have given up a long time ago, but I didn' t, and to stay at this level I am now, I still have to play or practice a lot, almost daily.
I am an experienced musician, a bass player with a strong percussions background, so, for sure, with a good, solid tempo.
I have been very fortunate, throughout the years, to have played a lot of music, with many great musicians in very diverse places with many bands, all over the world, and still manage to do so, having a lot of fun with good results.
Born in 1962 in Switzerland, I grew up between Milan, Italy and London till I was 6, then moved permanently to Milan, I have been playing music since the age of 12, started with flute, learned the guitar then started playing bass in 1978, including in the early 1980s electric bass guitar lessons with one of the best bass players in Italy at the time (and still), Mino Fabiano.
I love playing (and listening a lot) to music, in general all music styles, in the last years mostly towards the Jazz classics and Latin Jazz.
In 1982 I moved from Milan to Paris, France, then to Madrid, Spain, then to Los Angeles in 1984 and while living in the Southern California area travelled extensively for a few years across Latin America, where I had the opportunity to learn from the "masters" to play all the latin american percussions (conga, timbales, bongos, cowbells, hand percussions, etc.), and play with a lot of these guys, an experience that has been precious and still treasure, also useful for my bass playing.
During my 7 years stay in Southern California/Latin America I also played Latin American percussions with several local LA area jazz, latin and fusion bands.
I have always loved to listen to (and occasionally lucky to play with) superbe musicians, live or recorded and I learned (and still learn) a lot from that, I believe music is a continuous, never ending, pleasant (and painful at the same time) learning project, that you cannot stop. I have been fortunate to be able, in the late 70'/early 80' to "live through" the Milan recording studios scene (while learning the basics of recording techniques) having the chance to spend time, get to know, hang around many successful professional musicians and respected session players, that I watched and learned from, while they were recording in studio or playing live, a few of them still good friends today.
Having lived and played music in several areas of the world helps me bring different sounds and experiences wherever and with whomever I play with, while being rather versatile, I am grateful to life, appreciate what I received from it, and I am very proud of this.
When I moved back to Milan from California I joined the soul/funk band "A Bigger Splash" (featuring Angie Brown at vocals), playing gigs and events in Milan (latin american percussions and backing vocals) and neighboring regions.
Since 1998 when "A Bigger Splash" experience ended after more than 10 fun years of gigs and the band split up, I went back to my first love : electric bass, getting then on fretless and studying double bass, founded in 1999 a band, initially a trio then a quintet, called now "the Jazz Standards Quintet" ( www.myspace.com/jazzstandardsquintet and www.soundclick.com/jazzstandardsquintet ) or "JSQ" that I still play regularly with, a fun band featuring some great musicians, that performs in clubs, events, concerts in Milan and the rest of Italy.
I have started a new project in 2009, something I am particularly proud of, that I feel very much "mine" because it is my lifetime dream : the Latin Jazz Ensemble, with other very good musicians with whom we are playing the classics of afro Cuban/latin jazz, the Cuban boleros, samba, bossa, jazz standards in "latin groove"..... and several songs by my favourite artists, Paquito D' Rivera and Claudio Roditi, a nice project, stimulating is being appreciated throughout Italy. We have recorded a new CD "Latin + Jazz" that is going very well. Among other recognitions, what is probably the best Jazz radio station in England, UK JAZZ RADIO is broadcasting one of the tunes from the CD in the Ray Porter show "Jazz, a love affair"
I also play in jam sessions and gigs, mostly jazz but occasionally pop, blues and funk (with electric fretted bass) with other bands and always glad to play when possible Latin American percussion (my second musical passion, still) gigs, wish I could play more of that.
Although busy with my daytime job of medical entrepreneur and marketing consultant to many companies worldwide (that is what pays the bills at the end of the month....), I manage, with the help of a very supportive and patient family (you need that...) to practice and practice and practice (never ending), LISTEN and play a lot of music, while (important) having a LOT of fun doing it. I run my own small recording studio/practice room, the "Joy Boys Studio" next to my home in Milan, used for our jam sessions, practice (I know, I am lucky.....) and recording on 8 tracks digital recorder.
If you managed to get to the end of this story, I hope you will like the music you hear on this page.Love & Music.
