Cool Slideshows! It is a process and I stay out of the way while it is occurring; Two feet back from an empty canvas, a plethora of colors on my palette, a song programmed to repeat and I am ready to take flight. Most of the time I use my hands, fingers and on occasion my arms to push the paint around, I use brushes for the detail and pattern work. Most of my paintings are finger paintings and when I do them I revisit kindergarten all over again and again. I revisit the time before ego came forward to claim the day, before esteem and criticism hit the scene, a time of exploration and joy.I work in an intuitive state allowing the process to occur. I am not concerned with the aesthetics because I have an unyielding trust in the process that is occurring. When I am painting I feel an ultimate freedom as if I were outside of myself and at the same time I feel most connected to my body, this life and this world. I may listen to one piece of music three minutes long for up to forty hours and in some cases longer. It is not the words that I hook on to in a song; it is the underlying emotion or passion that is being conveyed in the music. While I may take part of the lyrics and create an image, the color and the movements are my interpretations of how the sounds would translate on to a canvas. I am very fortunate to have the time to create, the experience of painting has afforded me a great deal of joy and allowed for the in depth exploration of some truly wonderful music.“A painting, a sculpture or music they all lead to the same internal place. they all return us to the infinite, a place where words fall away and the silence is heard An artist renders their soul to a canvas, a piece of paper or a chord, willingly giving it over to the world and there by saving it from the world.†**************************************Carmen Costello is a self-taught artist.Carmen works around traditional and experimental techniques, adjusting, inflecting and twisting given forms to create new images. Carmen works in a state of intuitive action, creating a riotous display of brilliant colors, choppy swirling bush/hand strokes and abbreviated figures and symbols that invoke ancient modes of dance and ritual. Many of her works address timeless and fundamental issues of freedom, self-determination, gender and the environment. Carmen’s paintings are windows into a quintessential and unassimilated form of the individual life cycle, the seasons and stages of life where the only constant is change.Laughing at the Sun Gallery Austin, Texas. 3/96 “Celebrations†A multimedia event celebrating diversity in the arts and featuring 15 local artists.Quackenbush’s Art Space.
