The studio, RadioStar, was created by Grammy nominated producer, Sylvia Massy. After a successful career in Los Angeles, working with acts as varied as Tool to Prince to Johnny Cash, she pulled up stakes and came to the wilds of the Pacific Northwest to get away from the traffic and distractions of the big city. She and her husband Greg Shivy bought this historic theater at the base of Mount Shasta and converted it into studios and accommodations for musicians to work in. Sylvia is well known for her unconventional approach to recording and making albums.
There is no other place like RadioStar Studios in the world. What’s different about this studio is that during the month or more that the musicians are here recording their albums, they are all isolated from the rest of the world. Here they have to deal with their shortcomings. If the song sucks or they can’t play their instruments, it will be exposed. If they can’t work together as a band, the cracks show. If they have substance abuse problems, this becomes very apparent. There is no place to hide. But when there is magic within the chemistry of a group of musicians, it is amplified here.
