Boombastic Soundsystem

About Me

Boombastic Sound was founded in late1993 by Daddy Ini, Crucial P and Captain D. and played its first official session at Rumba, a now notorious venue for reggae parties, in Leuven somewhere in April 1994. The name was taken from a popular hit from the Rap band Dream Warriors:” My definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style”. Both Captain D. and Daddy Ini had reggae shows on local radio stations in Aarschot and Leuven back in the early and mid–eighties until the early nineties and already played regularly at parties in Antwerp (Paradox,Limelight, Pacific,…). It was at a reggae concert by the great Aswad in 1986 that they started to team up with Crucial P, who they accidentally met after the concert in Antwerp’s Central Station and they started playing separately or together at dances across Belgium. Meanwhile Daddy Ini also started to team up with Ragga Yves and Trippa Fullwood back in the late 90’s and started DJ’ing-toasting-rapping across the then early digital riddims coming out of Jamaica, sometimes having dj battles with crews like Rhyme Cut Core which then included TLP aka Troubleman While in Jamaica the dancehall sound system scene was dramatically changing, led by the infamous Stone Love, Inner City, Killimanjaro,… Crucial, Daddy Ini and Captain D. started to pick up those vibes and for the first time brought this type of soundsystem play to Belgium when they formed Boombastic Sound in 1994. Instead of hearing the same old classic tunes, the Belgium massive could now hear the latest 7 inches coming straight out of Jamaica, played in real soundsystem juggling style like the originators back in yard. Boombastic started to hit big after that, inspiring a now blooming Soundsystem Culture in Belgium. They were the first Belgian Sound to ever record a dubplate and the first Belgian Sound to play numerously in foreign countries - including the historical European Sound Clash in Bremen (Germany) in which they ended 3rd, just behind Jah Sound and Pow Pow . In 1998 Crucial P decided to leave the sound and selector Slo’Mo joined Boombastic. Slo'mo, who had been making waves as Riddim Progress, played weekly at Café Apero (Leuven) for several years. These wednesday evenings are still fondly remembered as one of the highlights in the Leuven Reggae scene, always promoting the newest tunes & stylez to a whole new set of people, many of them becoming real dancehall addicts themselves. Now his self produced remixes are played on radio stations from Toronto to Tokio, and, a 50 tune a minute juggler, he can outsmart any selector in the business . Captain D., although officially still a member, has a family now, so the Sound is really a 2 crew thing and ready to take on the future!!!
