Hi - My name is Jo Ann and I am Barry's sister. I wanted to let all of his myspace friends know that Barry passed away on 5/31/2008 of natural causes. If you wish to send stories, thoughts, and/or condolences to the family, please go to [email protected]; all of the emails are posted on discobarry.com. This will also be where we will post the details for Barry's Memorial Service.Sincerely, Barry's FamilyTHIS IS A BRIEF HISTORY OF MY LIFE AS I SEE IT........... I WAS BORN IN FAR ROCKAWAY N.Y. AND WAS RAISED IN THE BRONX AND ON LONG ISLAND. I WENT TO A SMALL COLLEGE IN UPSTATE NY CALLED ALFRED UNIVERSITY. I MAJORED IN SOCIOLOGY AND THEATRE. MY COLLEGE YEARS WERE THE BEST EVER. MY SCHOOL WAS BASICALLY IN A RURAL ONE STREET TOWN. ALL THE SOCIAL LIFE REVOLVED AROUND THE FRATERNITES. I WAS LUCKY TO BE SOCIAL CHAIRMAN AND MUSIC DIRECTOR OF MY FRATERNITY FOR 4 YEARS. WE HAD THE TYPICAL ANIMAL HOUSE TYPE OF GUYS WITH THE EVER SO POPULAR TOGA PARTY. THANK G-D ALL MY PARTYING DIDN'T STOP ME FROM GRADUATING. WHEN I RETURNED TO NYC, I GOT A JOB AS A SOCIAL WORKER AND A PART TIME JOB AS A DJ. THE FIRST PLACE I PLAYED AT WAS THE FIREHOUSE, A SPACE WHICH HELD A GAY ACTIVIST GROUP. I WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL THERE. ALTHOUGH THIS WAS MY FIRST GIG AND I WAS NEW TO MIXING, I WAS ABLE TO INCREASE THE ATTENDANCE THERE FROM 200 A NIGHT TO 1500. FROM THERE I PLAYED AT VARIOUS POSH PLACES THE LE CLUB(CONSIDERED TO BE THE FIRST DISCO IN AMERICA) AS WELL AS HIPPOTAMUS,L'INTERDIT AND DOUBLES. ALL THESE WERE VERY EXCLUSIVE. DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS I PLAYED IN THE PINES AT FIRE ISLAND. I WAS THE DJ AT THE BOTEL WHICH COINED THE WORD TEA DANCE AND THEN ON TO THE WORLD FAMOUS SANDPIPER RIGHT AFTER TOM MOULTON. DURING THESE YEARS I WORKED FOR THE CITY AND THE STATE OF NEW YORK AS A SOCIAL WORKER. HOWEVER AS MY DJING BECAME MORE NOTICED, I WAS EVENTUALLY OFFERED TO PLAY FULLTIME AND MY DJ CAREER WAS IN FULL SWING. I NEVER LOOKED BACK.BASICALLY AS A DJ I PLAYED IN THE FOLLOWING CLUBS:THE FIREHOUSE/LE CLUB/HIPPOPOTAMUS/THE SANDPIPER/ THE BOTEL ALL IN NY...AS A SOUND DESIGNER....12 WEST/THE ANVIL/LES MOUCHES..ALL IN NY AND FIRE ISLAND...TROCADERO TRANSFER/DREAMLAND S.F....PROBE/L.A...SALVATION/MIAMI.. AND THE ULTIMATE CLUB/THE SAINT IN NY...ALSO OTHERS IN TORONTO..THE BAHAMAS..AND ATLANTIC CITY MY CLAIM TO FAME SO TO SPEAK IS MOST LIKELY DUE TO MY YEARS AT BILLBOARD MAGAZINE WRITING THE DISCO MIX COLUMN. I DID THIS FOR 4 YEARS.THOUGH I HAD A DAY JOB(WHICH I WILL GO INTO SOON), I SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE COLUMN. SINCE IT WAS READ NATIONWIDE BY DJS, LABELS AND PRODUCERS, I WAS VERY CAREFUL ABOUT WHOM I WOULD WRITE ABOUT. I WAS VERY CAREFUL IN MY PRAISE AND OCCASIONAL NEGATIVE COMMENTS, AS THE COLUMN WAS INFLUENTIAL ENOUGH TO MAKE OR BREAK A RECORD. KNOWING THIS, I NEVER SOLD MYSELF SHORT IN ANYWAY. IF SO, MY INTERGRITY WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED, SOMETHING I WOULD NOT LET HAPPEN. DURING THIS TIME I WAS PRIVY TO ALL RECORDS DISCO ORIENTED. I MET MANY GREAT ARTISTS AS WELL AS DJS FROM ALL OVER. I CHERISH THOSE YEARS
