Heroes:

My hero is my Grandpa
All my life Ive seemed to confuse a hero with an idol. Just recently I've seen the difference. I Idolize my mother, and father and family and friends. But to me, there not my heros. Its taken 18 years for me to realize that a hero isnt someone you just look up to, but someone who has fought and given everything to become who they are. My grandpa, is the strongest person I've ever met in my entire life. He is a real life miracle. You see, after dropping out of middle school to get a job, working 46 years at fords, being married for 59 years, and rasing 8 children and over 20 grandchildren, the doctors told us he had Altzheimers. They also told us he wouldnt live too much longer. That was in 2000. 6 years later my grandpa sits in a nursing home unaware of all the family who loves him and the man he was. Seeing a man who you looked up to for so long, sit helpless and mindless, not knowing who his wife, or his kids, or me...his baby...his youngest grandchild. That just about breaks someones heart. When he looks at you, trying so hard to remember just who you are, and his big blue eyes once filled with strength and kindness are now helpless and empty... it tears you apart. But he's still fighting, thats the Love and the strentgh in this man. He wont give up the fight... even though he dont remember what hes fighting for! Thats why he's my hero, because without really having a reason, something tells him in his heart not to give up.... and thats me, and my mom and my grandma and my family... thats us in his heart... and he knows it... deep down he knows. And damnit, if someone that weak and mindless can still put up a fight, then theyre a hero in my book. I love you grandpa.
