About Me

"One of the most thorough professional boxing trainers in the world who specializes in punching power, hand speed, defense and balance. Ron is one of the very few trainers in pro boxing who still is in fantastic shape and whose methods of adding to the arsenal of top pros are amazing. His focus in training, in the corner and under any pressue is something to see, he is like ice and a great fight strategist during the fight. One of the last of the great connections to the best champions in boxing history. He guarantees a knockout, or knockdowns using his methods and his right hand and short left hook remain devastating at his age, so he is doing something right. One of the best."Quote from Boxing Legend George Chuvalo, who fought Ali, Foreman, Frazier and was Canadian Heavyweight Champion.Front Page Poughkeepsie Journal, Nov 2005."Ron Lipton's post fight interviews with Larry Merchant on HBO were always enjoyable to me as Lipton always shone through as a polite and intelligent referee who always did a great job as a real boxing man who paid his dues and deserved the big fights from spending a lifetime in boxing"On March 25, 1997 a live national telecast of the NewSport Talk TV Show with Chet Coppock was to be played many times over for several months. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and Ron Lipton appeared live together for an hour of air time in which Carter publicly credited former Police Officer Ron Lipton, his sparring partner as follows, "I would not be sitting here now if it were not for Ron Lipton, Ron is no liberal but a powerful and strong human being of dignity who sacrificed all he had to help me because he knew I was innocent."That show was the tip of the iceberg in a battle against many injustices that my father has fought all his life culminating in a Lifetime Civil Rights Achievement Award among others. He was the most experienced boxing referee I have ever seen, certainly the one in the best shape and the most experienced personally in the world of boxing. George Chuvalo added to his other comments in the front page article of NY Oldest Newspaper, The Poughkeepsie Journal in Nov 2005, "Ron has cat like reflexes and was one of the best referees I ever saw." The former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Marc Ratner, echoed the same sentiments as did HBO boxing judge Harold Ledderman, and many of the great champs of past and present. He has been the boxing expert behind many projects for film and stage and as Angelo Dundee said live with Brian Kenny on television, "When there is a boxing question I do not know, I turn to two men, Hank Kaplan and my friend Ron Lipton, the two best boxing historians I have ever known." My father has done tv shows with Bert Randolph Sugar and Bert tried to stump my father with boxing questions on WPDH radio but Dad answered them all. There are many boxing "Experts" in this world, but none did it all like my father, successfull fighter, referee, boxing writer, consultant, award winning boxing choreographer, pro corner man, pro trainer and physical fitness coach who sparred with and refereed some of the greatest fighters in history. I have never seen anyone in any gym punch faster and harder than him and we have it on film, he constantly amazes the fighters he trains because he can demonstrate it perfectly for them to this day, which differs him from any other trainer from his era.He has done over 10 live televised boxing shows with ESPN's Brian Kenny as a boxing expert and has appeared on national TV May 23, 2007 with Geraldo Rivera as his first choice of a boxing consultant. He also appeared with Bert Randolph Sugar on the Chet Coppock show, along with Steve Farhood, the former Editor of Ring Magazine. In addition he is the author of hundreds of boxing stories on the CyberboxingZone as a Staff historian and writer and receives questions on boxing training, history and technique from all over the world. He has been a published boxing writer for over 30 years. He managed SNOOPS BOXING GYM in Poughkeepsie NY, the country's larges boxing gym where he was Chief Trainer training all the fighters, amateurs, Pros, and helping all the youth in the community.Brett Lipton ___________________________________________________________R on Lipton quote: The thing I am most proud of is my two children Kim and Brett who are part of my heart forever. I have a great soul mate and love in Gabrielle and my life has been blessed with knowing them all including the two of the best canine buddies we ever had, Sonja who left us in 1997 and my Sweetie, the most loving dog ever who is now 11 years old. I am most happy when I helped someone turn their lives around through living clean and training hard. Teaching boxing has helped me to do that for hundreds of people, that have learned to respect themselves and others through boxing discipline. I train police officers, doctors, tough kids from the street, and all the college students that have honored me through the years by being in my class. I am a staff Boxing historian and writer for Cyberboxingzone.I hope you enjoy the vintage comic book covers from the 50's and some beautiful books I saved.I was the Senior Boxing Consultant for "Muhammad Ali, The Whole Story," an on screen contributor to "Cinderella Man, James Braddock, The Real Story, on DVD, and I wrote the introduction to Adeyinka Makinde's great book on Dick Tiger. I am proud to be mentioned in Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's book, "The Sixteenth Round," and by James Arness, TV's Marshall Dillon, in his autobiography, as his friend and fan.I have taught at Marist College for the last 8 years and it has been wonderful to have had such a positive impact on the students lives. It is a very rewarding feeling when they return to thank and visit me.I am a retired police officer and former police firearm instructor. I am happy to know that I was part of their training in helping to keep them safe while they risked their lives to protect ours.It was a privilege and honor for me to have refereed many great champs like Evander Holyfield twice, Roy Jones Jr, Oscar DeLahoya, Pernell Whitiker, Tommy "The Duke" Morrison, Roberto Duran, Montell Griffin, Steve Collins, Chris Eubank, David Tua twice, Harold Grey, Tracy Patterson twice, Prince Charles Williams, Merqui Sosa, Lonnie Bradley, Razor Ruddock, Howard Davis Jr, Yori Boy Campas, Jesse James Leija, Ray Mercer, Joey Gamache, Jeff Mayweather, and many other champs and top ten contenders in all divisions all over the United States, Ireland and Italy. ________________________________________________________Boxi ng Background:Ron Lipton From Boxrec Boxing Encyclopaedia Jump to: navigation, search Name: Ron Lipton Birthname: Ronald Lipton Alias: The Black Panther/Knockout Champion of the AAU Birthdate: 1946 August 8th Height: 5 feet 9 inches Weight: 135-154lbs.Ron Lipton is a well-known boxing referee, having refereed many bouts on HBO, Pay Per View and title bouts in the USA, Ireland and Italy. He was also touted as one of the hardest two handed punchers to come out of the NJ Golden Gloves. The Sept 1973 issue of World Boxing magazine stated, "Lipton one of the hardest punchers ever in eastern amateur competition." Able to do massive amounts of chinups, dips and pushups, he was an exercise and health food fanatic who trained with world famous bodybuilder Mr. World, Bill Grant, out of the Orange NJ YMCA who still communicates with Ron to this day.He was born in New York City in 1946 and started boxing in 1962 at 16 after years of childhood hospitalizations. He fought in the lightweight and welterweight divisions. In his youth, Lipton was a sparring partner of middleweight contender Rubin Carter. Lipton stayed in Carter's Ehsan's training camp in Chatam NJ for over three years. Both fighters had also worked out at the Newark Market Street Gym called "Mooksie's."He also sparred with Muhammad Ali in Deer Lake Pennsylvania and the 5th Street gym in Miami Florida and traveled extensively with him visiting homeless shelters and children's hospitals. He was Champion Dick Tiger's sparring partner for his title rematch with Giardello, and Lightweight Champion of the World Carlos Ortiz's sparring partner for the Madison Square Garden title fight with Gabrielle "Flash" Elorde. Lipton also sparred with rugged top middleweight contender Jose Monon Gonzalez, Newark's famous lightweight Lloyd Marshall and many other top contenders and champions from that era.Lipton was a standout as an amateur boxer. He scored back-to-back 16-second knockouts, and compiled an amateur boxing record of 39-3 (38 knockouts), with two of his losses coming at the beginning of his amateur career while he was just starting out and still revovering from being sick and long hospital stays with ulcerative colitus. On March 25, 1966, Lipton injured his arm fighting a special exhibition with his friend and former 5-time NJ Golden Glove Champion Richie Gonzalez in a bout in West Orange NJ for the Mountain High School Athletic fund. Two months later, on May 15, 1966, Lipton knocked out undefeated NY fighter Felix Ortega in 16 seconds at the St. Augustine Church in New York City in a benefit for the local Boys Club. Syd Martin Emile Griffith's trainer was in Lipton's corner for the bout. Two months later on July 5, 1966, Lipton, now known as the "Knockout Champion of the AAU," also knocked out Steve Quinn in 16 seconds on the last live show on Channel 47 TV's weekly telecast live from Symphony Hall in Newark, NJ. Quinn, a light-heavyweight, was a last minute substitute for Mike Riley, an undefeated lightweight who could not show. Lipton, outweighed heavily, stopped the 6' Quinn, who had ko'd rugged Hector Torres weeks before in the first round on television. The bout was permitted at the last second by A.A.U. chairman Joe Lavista after both corners agreed to the fight. George Branch, New Jersey Boxing Hall of Famer of Newark's Parks Branch boxing club, was in Lipton's corner for the record settting KO.Lipton also had a career as a police officer. First he worked for the New York Waterfront Commission providing security for Port Newark, Port Elizabeth, The North River and then full time for the Verona New Jersey Police Department, and later became an Investigator for the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office where he worked on the Narcotic Strike Force and was the Police Firearm Instructor for the Prosecutor's Office and the Sheriff's Department. He also supervised the Hudson County S.W.A.T. Team from 1971-75 under the direction of Chief Martin Greenberg. He later was employed in various police departments in New York State, retiring in 1987 from the NY City HRA Police Department.Previously in NJ Lipton became involved in a 1979 defense of his home where he had to repel many drunken trespassers who had terrorized the neighborhood and had crashed a truck onto his property. One of them pulled a knife on Lipton who confronted them on his property. He had to use his fists and a baseball bat to repel the attack. He stood trial for the serious injuries he inflicted upon his attackers but was found not guilty of four of the five charges against him. The jury was hung on the fifth charge and it was dismissed in August of 1982, after Muhammad Ali testified in his defense. (NJ Star Ledger Jan. 82 "Ali Testifies At Trial of Old Sparring Partner.")Lipton was an advocate for Rubin Carter's release from prison. He claimed his efforts to help Carter led to his losing his job and the pressures affected his marriage after repeated attacks upon his home and family with each home defense resulting in another trial and innocent verdict. It was later learned the attackers were relatives and friends of the local police. The Atty General's Office later disbanded the local police department for crimes committed by some of those officers. He won a Black Prestige Lifetime Civil Rights Achievement Award in 2002 in Poughkeepsie NY and another Man of Distinction Award in Nov 2007 in Fishkill NY from the NAACP.He won 4 Federal Civil Rights law suits and had any charge ever filed against him dismissed in trial except one self defense misdemeanor. In that self defense case trial the judge was disbarred for theft and dishonesty for his biased handling of that case where Lipton had to fight 3 men in 1997. Lipton fired his own layer in that case for professional misconduct and the lawyer was found guilty for not defending him properly. In all his ordeals he always gave better than he got and became a teacher, trainer and boxing coach helping as many youths as he could on his own time.According to many he was blackballed as a referee for speaking out against the corruption in boxing and especially the inept officals appointef by the NYSAC who were responsible for ring deaths and bad decisions. The old regimes and their present friends in the NY and NJ Commission blackballed him according to many people in boxing without ever giving him one reason for denying his license. Part of that regime fixed the Gatti v Gamache weigh in resulting in serious injury to Gamache. They also permitted the attempt to tamper with the officials in the DeLahoya V Leija fight which Floyd Patterson stood up to and prevented. He always tried to help the fighters who were his main love and concern and has stayed friends with many champions from the past who visit with him to meet and to help other kids in need at Ron's request. He is also known for his many tattoos of panthers (he always wore trunks with an image of a black panther on them) and his muscular build. He maintained his fighting weight and physique until his present age in 2008.He became the boxing instructor at Marist College teaching an acredited course for the School of Science as an adjunct lecturer. He was a pro cornerman recently going up against Vassily Jirov the former World Cruiserweight Champion and Olympic Gold Medal Winner in July of 2007.He has long been a published boxing writer and worked as a boxing consultant and choreographer for film and stage where he won several awards including the Audelco and the Obie for his student who played Ali. He also achieved a black belt in judo and competed in many competitions.[edit] Sources Internet Search Newark Evening News, Wednesday, July 5, 1966: QUICK KO BY LIPTON.----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------Amateur Record: 39-3 (38 knockouts) 23 KOs in the first round Fought many exhibition bouts in Lake Hoptatcong Land and Home Owners Assoc Club and NYC Al Roon's Health Club for famous Madison Square Garden supplier G&S Sporting goods, Mr.Izzy Zerling V top NJ, NY and USA competition NJ Elizabeth Elks Golden Gloves, NJ A.A.U., 1965 NJ Mercer County Finalist Moose Hall in Trenton. My Interests

I'd like to meet:

..

I always wanted to meet Peter Graves and Martin Landau from Mission Impossible. I always respected their work and Peter is James Arness' brother. James Arness I am proud to say has always been my friend since I was a little boy and his role of Matt Dillon on Gumsmoke was a great inspiration to all honest police officers. I would also enjoy meeting Peter Falk whose work I admired so much in Columbo, The In Laws and The Brinks Job. Dustin Hoffman, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Wes Studi from Geronimo, The Last of The Mohicans and Heat, and great actor Gary Oldman whose career I followed from it's beginning. He did a great job in Hannibal as Mason Verger, and in "State of Grace," and everything else he works in.Directors, Oliver Stone Rob Reiner, Ridley Scott and Michael Mann are some of my favorites. The greatest performance ever was of Caligula by the great actor John Hurt in the Masterpiece Theater's Production of, "I Claudius", along with Brian Blessed, George Baker, Sian Phillips, and the great Derek Jacobi.
