The story of HUNGRY JOHNNY
HUNGRY JOHNNY was born in the twisted minds of two cousins Wayne H Bomb and Johnny Undead, during summer 2007, after a barbecue washed down with plenty of beers (...a good way to develop creativity).
They are fed up with boring week-end and play fucking thrash speed would be good for them so, they put the money left (which has not been spent into drinks yet) into the best material to play music (V-amp, what else !!!). Then, they begin to compose riffs, songs and "metafunnysical" lyrics (but always honest or true sometimes), dealing with alcool, movies, horror, games, nature, war, life, death and more...).
Then Bobby Building joined the band on rhythm guitar.
Each member play metal since their first teenage masturbation.
- "Well, why are we doing it, guys ?" ask Wayne. - "to play a lot of gigs !" shout Johnny and Bobby. Now, they found a rehearsal room with toilets like "Trainspotting" and asked their friend Gaspar to handle the drums and thus, working on songs to build their actual setlive and continuing to compose for openning the gate to a new Thrashing hell in the near future...
During their drunken Friday nights, they record songs which appear on their myspace and their first demo “Depraved at birth (2008)”. Five thrash speed metal tracks (True thrash ! not hardcore’s things play by some bands, they think playing thrash...) to help to promote the band.
2008 March 1st, Gaspar leaves the band because of lack of time and he was replaced by Butcher Luke.
The curse of H.J. has been once again crushed by our motivation !
Hungry more than ever...
Today, lots of songs have been composed and they are getting stronger and better everytime.

Mehr in den Süden geht nun die Reise mit den Franzosen von Hungry Johnny und ihrem Beitrag „If you Become Blind". Man sollte sich nicht vom Namen der von der Cote d' Azur stammenden 2007 gegründeten Truppe verwirren lassen. Kein Punk wird hier zelebriert, nein eine gute Lehrstunde in Sachen Thrash Metal steht erneut am Programm. Mit viel Bay Area Flair und alten Einflüssen von Anthrax Sachen bläst man dies mit viel räudigem und rotzigem Flair durch die Boxen das man nur eines kann. В составе этой банды замечены люди из AFFLICTION GATE, но музыка здесь совсем другого плана. Отбросив всю паутину мрака DEATH METAL, французы отправляются на тёплоё побережье, где правит дух свободы и THRASH METAL веселье. Кепки, шорты, майки, DEATH ANGEL, M.O.D., MEGADETH, ANTHRAX-вот в принципе из чего сделаны HUNGRY JOHNNY.
Прекрасные 80-е годы, когда королями момента были летние общества вроде CLASH OF TYTANS, вот там примерно и остались со своей игрой HUNGRY JOHNNY. Весёлое время, со знакомыми наизусть гитарными ходами а-ля D.Mustaine/S.Ian.и как можно не принять такие действия ?! Уважаемая музыка! Хороший вокалист, подходящий к их театру и иногда до боли знакомые выкрики хором на подхвате. Я провёл время не зря, слушая их дебют. Бальзам, да и только !

Though the name of this 4-piece thrash metal band from France may make them come across as a “comedy metal” act along the lines of Lich King, Hungry Johnny actually manage to pay homage to the 80's thrash bands while at the same time having enough originality to keep things interesting, and that too without going overboard like Coroner or Mekong Delta. The music may take some time to sink in, and the band may appear as a cheap Vio-lence clone on the first listen, but Hungry Johnny are perhaps one of the better thrash bands today who don't do all-out Exodus or Kreator worship.
The music is very... interesting (I can't think of a better word at the moment) to say the least. The riffs here are very cool and catchy, and are fairly intricate. Instead of repeating short riffs over and over again during verses, the riffs are usually of medium to long length. The song structures are very good and the band seems to have put a lot of thought into them, unlike their contemporaries Toxic Holocaust and Lich King. Though I enjoy the straight-forward assault of the two bands I have mentioned, Hungry Johnny are very good at what they do and don't fall into the trap many late 80's thrash bands fell in by over-complicating the music. The guitar solos here are quite melodic and succeed in drawing the listener further into the music. However, the guitars are perhaps too loud and the drumwork is barely audible, along with the vocals. This one flaw ruins the music for me sometimes, but you get used to it when you listen to it more often. The bass is also well played, but for some reason it is only 100% audible in the song “Red Alert.”
Overall, good demo and the band has my recommendation. My favorite songs would be “Red Alert” and “Falling Down.”

Am I dreaming ?!!! Some French EXCELLENT vintage thrash metal ??!! Aaaargh !! Six neckbreakers on this demo CD, no fillers, just killers ! Technical speed / thrash at its best (MEGADETH, LIVING DEATH and SEPULTURA for example...) with rock’n’roll influences. Great sound too. Any review will be useless, go to their myspace (see the links page) NOW !!! Killer release believe me !!!

Oui, j’avoue qu’ils ont fait fort avec l’artwork de leur première démo mais le fait d’être pris au sérieux ne semble pas être la motivation principale qui anime le joyeux quatuor d’HUNGRY JOHNNY venu tout droit de la région PACA. Alors, il est vrai qu’avec une approche pareille, on peut avoir bon nombre de préjugés avant même d’avoir glissé cette première démo dans son lecteur. Encore un groupe de métal franchouillard en espadrille qui va nous niveler par le bas le QI du métalleux de base. Déjà que l’intellect n’est pas la discipline dans laquelle le genre brille le plus et se résume parfois à une poignée de Forest Gump chevelus, c’est pas un groupe comme ça qui va arranger nos affaires.
Mais bien vite on se ravise, car si « Johnny la fringale » ne se prend pas franchement au sérieux, c’est avec la plus grande minutie qu’il nous a concocté les cinq morceaux de cette sémillante maquette. Ce quatuor décapant nous propose de revivre l’espace d’une vingtaine de minutes, la joyeuse frénésie du thrash metal des années 80. Jusque-là rien de bien révolutionnaire puisqu’on ne compte plus les tentatives plus ou moins réussies pour nous ramener vers l’époque divine où la bay area et l’Allemagne régnaient sur le genre d’une suprématie absolue.
Dans le cas de HUNGRY JOHNNY, l’essai est plutôt convaincant puisque le groupe a réussi la prouesse de proposer un thrash définitivement attaché à ses racines sans pour autant sonner rétro. Si les Sudistes clament pêle-mêle leurs affiliations à tous les groupes en « -tor », Francis Cabrel, la disco des années 70 ou NAPALM DEATH, on pourrait plutôt les classer comme un croisement d’un VIO-LENCE et un NUCLEAR ASSAULT de la grande époque. Il est clair que le courant thrash américain reste le terrain de prédilection dans lequel HUNGRY JOHNNY se complaît par ses riffs bouillonnants et accrocheurs mais on remarque également quelques détails plus européens comme le placement aigu du chant, irritant pour le non-initié, qui évoque parfois les premiers LIVING DEATH ou encore la construction chiadée de certains titres qui pourrait parfois évoquer CORONER.
Vous l’aurez déjà compris, HUNGRY JOHNNY sous ses airs de franches tartuferies est en fait un pur groupe de thrash metal, riche des ingrédients qui font encore aujourd’hui tout l’intérêt du bon thrash metal. Ce côté trépidant, fonceur et tout simplement imparable qui fait irrémédiablement taper du pied ou bouger la tête. Et quand ce fougueux thrash metal débordant d’enthousiasme se pare de quelques finesses et de fraîcheur, on frise la perfection.
La « New wave of french thrash metal » est en marche. Chaud devant !
