THE BALLS "Maybellene" Järvenpään Puistoblues/Zapata - 2008
Well....Well....Well..........
It has been an adventurous, exciting road full of gladness and sadness with all the colours, not grey bland black and white shit. The Balls started in the summer 1988 with Tipi, Peevo and Sande and later that year Pera joined and then Marjo, gigs started right away when Marjo joined a lot of fun was had by all indeed, then in early summer 1989 Rane Raitsikka at that time playing bass decided to move to Los Angeles. The band having found the extraordinary groove and lots of gigs lined up for summer wasted no time and asked Jimi Sero to join and The Balls swinged on mightily, lots of gigs naturally and good hectic times and the road... party time record Drunkfish was released later 1989, 1990 gigs aplenty as before acoustic gigs in various radio stations when arriving to new cities to promote gigs wonderful concept. In 1991 balls spent a month in Toronto being invited there previous summer when promoter Temisevä saw band in summerfestival rocking. m
March of 1991 was beautiful there lots of gigs and welcoming friendly Canadian people. At that time schedule was hectic two days after landing back to Helsinki jetlaggin.. a two week finnish tour was on tiring but so sweet it felt good to be alive. 1991 Jimi took a break and Maria played bass for awhile. In the fall Marjo moved to California for awhile band took a break but soon Marjo came back and Jimi also and the band played on.... constant gigging improved the already juicy and grooving swing of the band and 1993 January band was captured in a fine form with Balls Change When Balls Want To Change title old blues style language, the record was supposed to be also vinyl and marvellous acoustic session with Sande playing cardboard box with Neumann miking exceptionally fine swinging unplugged scene was going to be vinyl EP but tragically Poko Records backed out of their word and nixed the wonderful idea. CD was then only availability, sad! But the band played .. going further with the story let..s explain Rane Raitsikkas role in helping to form the band. In the fall 1988 Rane met Marjo at some wild party where Marjo was singing, rough diamond sound caught Ranes ear and he brought Marjo to rehearsals. And there was also mini lp in 1989 in which Rane played bass before moving to California. 1993 after Balls Change When Balls Want To Change record the band continued playing lots of gigs and summer festivals, in the 93-94 winter there was keyboard player Mikko Rintanen bringing extra colours to bands sound, in early summer 1994 Pera left the band and band moved on.In 1995 there was Jungle In A Barrel record, 1996 band took a break when Marjo was pregnant. In the late nineties Jimi left the band and Jari Paulamäki joined. Band released Skinny Dipping record with that line-up in 2001. Then 2005 there was a double compilation cd Fastlane Throught The History Of Balls and to celebrate the publishing the band (original lineup) played fine swinging gig and found groove still strong. One of the founding members Tipi sadly passed away in early December 2007. The Balls played a couple of memorial gigs and decided to swing and play on...and on....and on....
In other words:
If we walk away now we..ll walk away from our skills, our vocations, leaving next generation with nothing but digitally-sampled techno grooves, quasi-synth rhythms, pseudo songs of violence-laden gangster rap, acid pop and saccharine, soulless slush.
If we depart now and we forever separate ourselves from the vital legacies of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Memphis Slim, Blind Boy Fuller, Louis Jordan, Little Walter, Big Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson 1 and 2, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, B:B King, Albert King and Freddy King, Etta James, Memphis Minnie etc.
If we turn our backs and we snuff out the fragile candles of Blues, Rhythm&Blues, Soul and Rock..n..Roll. When those flames expire, the light of the world is extinguisehed because the music which has moved mankind for seven decades will wither and die from abandonment and neglect.
