The band PLASTIC MARTYR was initiated by vocalist and bass player Tim Sinclair of Lynchburg. He had already lined up Robbie Hartless to play guitar and later recruited Judas (Jody Smith) of Roanoke to play drums. Tim, formally of the great band, MALICIOUS ATTACK of Lynchburg had known Judas by having met in roughly 89', in Vinton at William Byrds talent show featuring one of Vintons hardcore bands Wasted Reality which later evolved to Integration. Judas was then the drummer of LYCANTHROPY and later Slaves of Pain and had just wrapped up playing guitar in MASS PROTEST when asked to join Martyr in 94'. Most songs were those that Tim had written while in Malicious Attack and had a handful of new ideas that got to be worked on later.
The band, with just one practice under their belt, was asked to play at the old Lady Bird Apparel warehouse in Roanoke that Barry Webster had rented out to throw a show in which Richmond heroes Inquisition were playing. Inside kids were skateboarding and having a blast. Plastic Martyr played and enjoyed sharing the stage with them in which Tim and the vocalist from Inquistion, Thomas, were old friends from a stint Tim had prior in Richmond.
Plastic Martyr was then off and running. Judas had a local mag called BLOOD PASTE and with the mag and band both running, his mission in life was to put Roanoke on the map. Many bands were sending demos to Blood Paste and Shirley Thomas and "Chief" of the IROQUOIS CLUB would allow Judas to rifle through demos to book shows for her under the promotion title, GANGSTER BOOTY PRODUCTIONS. With so many good bands from out of state, so many locally, and with so many great benefits to play for like the American Indian Movement, Child Abuse, Aids awareness and for local businesses like The Underground, the band found themselves playing frequently and in high demand.
Locally they played with good friends, Obscurity, Crank, Dirty Politix ,R2N and Draino and Tonic often as well as others. Out of state bands included their good buddy's The Irritations of Charlotte N.C., Thorazine of Philadelphia and the Hard On Gang of Pittsburg and many others as well.
With support from many friends including Kelly Dudley, Buddha, Angie Hancock, Shane Patsell and Michaelynn, Big Jay, Dolinger, Chris Krap, Penny and Antoinette, ol' Clay Rothrock,B.B., Pickle, Our M.V.P. at all shows Mike Grubb,Dolinger, Skinny Mike and Pete, Monica Moses, Tracey Graybill and Cindy, Shaun Carrol, Barry Webster, Mark Greene, Jason Keffer, Kent( Robbie's Cuz), Shannon, all the cats from Malicious Attack, the passion of Jeff Caywood and all of Dirty Politix, R2N, Crank and Obscurity, Suppresion and so many others(sorry if forgotten),how could they not have been having the time of their lives.
Plastic Martyr recorded the Goes to Rehab demo at Southwest Recording Studio owned and run by the legendary Chuck Crush in 94'.
The band had captured a moment of time, a time in Roanoke that has repeated itself many times for others later, and had many times before. For the band, and all those that had shared that time with them.... wasn't it a FUCKING BLAST?!!
This is for those of you that had experienced such a fun time in life, shared it with the band, dedicated to those who have since passed away and for those who did not get a chance but may enjoy the music and pics and maybe reminded of a similar time in life as well.
We will continue to update. A new, updated version of the demo is in the works by Tim, T-shirts, 7"s and bootleg live recordings are also planned. Stay tuned and enjoy a blast from the past and enjoy life today.
