About Me

Hmmm... what to say?? well I guess I should start by saying I was born in Stockholm. My birthday is on September 18, 1905 (buy me presents!! ;D) My name used to be Greta Lovisa Gustafsson until Mauritz Stiller, the foremost Swedish director, gave me the stage name Greta Garbo. I wasn't always an actress, I was born to a very poor family and my father died when I was 14. I was forced to work at a barbershop and department store in order to support my family. I did an advertising short for the department store I worked for, Eric Petscher saw it then gave me a role in his short film, Peter The Tramp(1920). After doing that film I decided to study at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm for two years (1922-1924). During that time is when I met Mauritz Stiller, who trained me in cinema-acting techniques. Mauritz went to the United States in 1925 to work for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he made them give me a contract also. I appeared in 27 films. My first talking picture, Anna Christie (1930) was my WORST PERFORMANCE EVER in my opinion. Others loved the film - I think they're a bit touched in the head. Anna Christie earned me one of my four Academy Award nominations for 'best actress'. If you would like to read more on my films just look in my filmography blog. At age 36, after filming my worst movie, Two Faced Woman(1941) I retired and moved to New York. In 1954, I won a special Academy Award for unforgettable performances. So after being in front of the camera for so many years, I decided to take up gardening. I love growing my own vegetables. If there's anything else you want to know just ask me
