Band Members: I'm an aspiring musician born and raised in Connecticut. I know....enter eye roll here, right? Most people assume that people from Connecticut are a bunch of stuck up, rich snobs, and therefore I must kind of suck to not have gotten anywhere with my parents' money. That's not even close to the truth.
I come from pretty humble beginnings myself -- born in Bridgeport, CT, definitely not on the right side of the tracks, but somehow I made it through with my loving, crazy family. We've been through the worst times -- my mom being a single mother with three kids, on welfare, trying to get through college to give her kids a better future, being one of the hardest -- but these are the things that make us stronger and inspired me early on to take a keen interest in music. It was both my escape and my way of communicating with the world.
Nowadays I'm doing better for myself. I'm now 18 years old, a sophomore in college -- the first in my family to go to a traditional, four year, Bachelor's degree earnin,' dorm room livin' college, and I couldn't possibly enjoy it any more.
Except, of course, if I was somehow able to channel my love for music into something bigger than just a hobby. That's where this page comes in -- I don't have any big plans in the works at the moment, I don't know what's going to happen, if anything does, regarding my music. All I know is I've been writing my own material since I was eleven and I'm going to keep on writing music until the day I die. This is my way to share my music take some pointers, improve, and see where it all leads me. I'll be posting videos and audio snippets, mostly of me either singing my own material a capella or singing a few time-tested favorites from my repertoire along with instrumental tracks. I hope you enjoy my music. Peace out, cub scout!
Influences: My musical influences as a child were very heavily nurtured by my mother's taste in music. She liked (and still does like, I might add) Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Mariah Carey, as well as Whitney Houston and TLC.
Later on, (I will begrudgingly admit, for the sake of honesty!) that I was into all kinds of horrible bubblegum pop nonsense. You know what I'm talking about: Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera. I'm proud to say I never bought into Hanson (even in 4th grade I wasn't buyin' none o' that 'MMMBop' nonsense!) although their new song 'The Great Divide' is worth a listen.
Luckily, as I grew older, I branched out, and developed a great appreciation for many, many types of music, although I never did quite acquire a taste for, say, bluegrass or polka. But I digress.
I listen to just about everything else, though. I listen to quite a bit of Top 40's type stuff -- right now that's alot of Rihanna, One Republic (who are EXCELLENT in concert, I must recommend them!), Timbaland, etc etc. I especially like digging up older stuff -- classic rock and jazz mostly, because I think it's important to have a knowledge of where the music we listen to today comes from. Other than that, the current stuff I listen to falls mostly into two categories: stuff I can sing to and stuff I can dance to. In the 'sing to' category is just about every variety of rock and jazz and r&b you can imagine and in the 'dance to' is basically dancehall, reggaeton, hip hop, urban goodness.
I would list specifics except it would just be a massive list of bands and artists and I think an explanation is a bit more informative than a generic list. Instead, I'll just list a few songs currently gracing my top 25 most played on iTunes (& I will be updating this fairly regularly):
I'm In Love With A Girl -- Gavin Degraw
Hallelujah -- Paramore
Liar (It Takes One To Know One) -- Taking Back Sunday
Say (All I Need) -- One Republic
Beatdown in the Key of Happy -- Four Year Strong
Big Branch -- M.I.A.
Save If For the Bedroom -- You Me at Six
At Last -- Etta James
Immigrant Song -- Led Zeppelin
Bohemian Rhapsody -- Queen
Kiss -- Prince
Me & Mr Jones -- Amy Winehouse
Sounds Like: No one's ever really told me I sounded like (fill in the blank.) So I guess just take a listen and decide for yourself.
