The Sami Sisters - "Cry"from "Happy Heartbreak!"The Sami sisters are Madeleine, Anji and Priya Sami. Three singing, Guitar playing, coffee coloured songstresses of Irish and Indian descent born and bred in Auckland, New Zealand. Growing up in a noisy household, raised by their Mum, the girls were attracted to an eclectic variety of music. They learned to sing watching the Sound of Music, Grease and West side story over and over again. They sang in Musicals, in Jazz bands and all began song writing individually in their teens. Influences range from country artists of yesteryear like Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline to 50’s girls bands and classic motown to 80’s greats like Kate bush and The Smiths. ..
Madeleine is the eldest and an award-winning actress. Anji, the middle/moody sister is a singer songwriter proper. She released the ‘El Dorado’ ep in 2006 to much acclaim and won a prestigious b net award. The youngest sibling, Priya, has been slumming her talent in the sleazy underworld that is Auckland’s cover circuit since she was in her early teens. Her catching pop original ‘Mrs Julian Casablancas†A tongue and cheek, ‘school girl crush’ ode to The Strokes front man was an unexpected radio hit in New Zealand. ..
In May 2007 the girls combined forces playing their first ever shows in Sydney and Melbourne. They have played support for Rufus Wainwright, Don Mc Glashan and Kasey Chambers. Their brand of nostalgic/country/20’s, 40’s, 50’s girl group/80’s Morrissey/90’s spice girls music boasts an ever increasing following, winning fans over with there witty sisterly banter, carefully crafted melodies and those magically close sibling harmonies. ..
