The Nine Pound Hammer tribute known as The Kentucky Breakdown began in September of 2007. Rygar had met Keenan a couple of years ago but didn't really get to know him until the summer of '07. First talking at Tom's shows at the Eagles Club, and then eventually jamming. Keenan told Rygar during one of these late night talks that he doesn't "just play the drums, I'm a drummer". This was good news for Rygar and he kept Keenan's phone number.
At about the same time, Rygar had been putting classified ads up at local music stores and had gotten a reply from a fella named Tim who played bass. It turned out that Tim and Rygar had known one another for years, both being in previous bands that had shared the bill together at various shows.
Rygar was sure that he wanted to work with these two gentlemen but they didn't know each other yet. All three were very serious about writing original music. And all three had great ideas. The problem (sometimes) is that when no one knows one another there can be a lot of difficulties just getting started. Everyone wants to do their own thing and a lot of times people end up not calling each other back. To avoid this, Rygar suggested they cover the Nine Pound Hammer album Hayseed Timebomb, take a month or two to get to know one another and the material, play out once (maybe more), and then settle down to write some original tunes.
So far the've followed this plan. How much they will play this set out is still up in the air, but keep your ears peeled for their NEW band playing all ORIGINAL material under a new original band name sometime summer/fall '08. Until then, you'll be able to hear selections from their practice sessions, possibly updated weekly. Keep your ears peeled for an occasional original song. You never know when they might tease you with one!
OK......so it didn't work out. Everything went according to plan until they started writing their own stuff. They recruited a second guitar player named Phil. Then everything fell apart. First Keenan left for milkier ways, then Tim "Whiskey Ditch"ed out. Now Rygar and Phil have started their own band called Lion Slicer with the help of Caribou members Adam on drums and Nate on bass. Watch out for Lion Slicer at a venue near you coming soon. For more information, check the link below.
And finally, the Kentucky Breakdown would like to thank everyone that went to their few shows and gave them support. It was much appreciated.http://lionslicer.com/
