About Me
I Had just moved to NYC, in 1986. I stopped in to a great store called See Hear, I happened to look on the bulletin board and saw this scraggly ass piece of paper that looked like it had been found on the floor or in the gutter, It was like 1"by 3" and said "gtr player wanted...B-day party, flipper, Black Flag, Scientists", and gave a to call. So I called and talked to Natz, and he invited me to practice down on 1st and Ave B. When I arrived with my 12$ gtr, natz asked me if I had a sister, and was her name Lisa Carr (Lung Leg). Nope,
But he swore we were related, in some way. Kern...Who I had never heard of yet,was out of town in Europe showing his films. But we played and I think felt an instant rapport. We were definately related musically. I know I liked Natz and Patrick quite alot. I was 21 yrs old and never even played gtr in a band (or at all really!). I remember The next practice, Kern showed up and saw my srings and he started laughing and asked if maybe it ever occured to me to change the strings! I said I didnt know that you had to change strings, And could he show me how? So I had been playing with strings that were like 10 yrs old, But I kinda thought that gave me my " sound". Anyway, It was really a stroke of luck first
off, then the fact that we all seemed right for each other as a band. So we set about to make some records. Toured a bit with the Honeymoon Killers, Pussy Galore. We played shows with Sonic Youth, Swans, Workdogs, White Zombie, Union Carbide Prod., Royal Trux, Live Skull,
Sloth, Raging Slab and some others. After awhile though, things kind of got a little tense and self absorped, and maybe the drugs didnt help either (or maybe they did!), Except for Patrick, who enjoyed a good whisky at the end of an evening,we were all equally involved, in that aspect, but halfway through the recording of our second record we blew up against rock and roll! I think it was Kerns Idea to quit 1st, And without him where the fuck were we gonna get connections. He was responsible for any success that we had, Most assuredly. But obviously we all played a part. So off he went.
We all remained friends and I dont remember there being any beefs between any of us.....
it was just that rock and roll was so stupid and annoying! I guess I still havent learned my lesson, cause I still have this idea that I love playing music in a band. Although I am growing pretty weary, and yes Leary of the whole scheme! I loved those guys all of em.
I just read that Patrick passed away in 2001, If this is true, I am deeply saddened, that guy was so GREAT! His drum playing was absolutely ferocious and wild! But as a person he was gentle, quiet, had a wonderful and odd sense of humor, and was very Kind. But also I understand the nature of our time here on earth. I havent seen too much of Natz or Richard, Although we have crossed paths on occasion. After a year or two after the BlackSnakes retired, I moved to Texas, and began what to some might be considered my own musical Legacy. With Fireworks, Blacktop, Red Devils etc.
