Mr.Cheeks~RIP TAHLEEK

About Me

Before establishing himself as a solo artist in the early 2000s, Mr. Cheeks made a name for himself as a member of the Lost Boyz in the mid- to late '90s. Cheeks and the other members of the Lost Boyz practiced a sincere, literate, non-sensational style of New York hip-hop. As a result, they never attained substantial commercial success, yet garnered substantial critical acclaim and were underground favorites. But when Freaky Tah met an unfortunate demise, the Lost Boyz soon broke ranks and remained quiet. Cheeks resurfaced in late 2001, though, and he came with a more mature outlook on life that informed his rhymes with a greater sense of knowledge and truth than before. His debut solo album, John P. Kelly, featured the massive hit single "Lights, Camera, Action!" as well as production by a broad roster of producers including Stephen Marley, Bink!, and Easy Mo Bee. Jason Birchmeier. Today Mr. Cheeks is signed to Damien Marleys Tuff Gong Records, his long awaited CD titled 25 & Up is sure to have us 30 plusers..& younger listeners remember, find out what grown up music is....

The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on August 7, 1996.A hard core look inside the Lost Boyz' life experiences, August 4, 1999 By A Customer"Legal Drug Money" represents "putting Queens on the map, " specifically, South Jamaica, and South Ozone Park, "across the bridge" from rappers such as LL Cool J. These are neighborhood names previously ignored in the media. The album is proof the same problems the Lost Boyz rap about are prevelant in Harlem, New York; Red Hook, Brooklyn, Chicago, Illinois or any other "urban" city. Songs such as the tragic "Renee", "Lifestyles...", "1, 2, 3," "Get Up", the title track, "Music Makes Me High," are tunes that will make you dance, and laugh as well as cry. The Lost Boyz speak about the pain and the pleasure of their lives. They love to party, and the beats behind "Music Makes Me High, " and "Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless" are reminders of the energy and excitement of James Brown, or Kook and the Gang---but on a completely different level! Their raps about growing up, police harassing them and their friends, or the ups and downs of love, and living in the hood--is an album/CD definately worth your listening to, but listen carefully. The Lost Boyz are describing a 'hood society at large ignores. I love this piece of work by these four hardworking young men; Mr. Cheeks, "Pretty" Lou, "Spigg" Nice, and "Freaky" Tah. The fact they are recording songs about street life in the 90's. This just proves how much things stay the same in the ghettos of the USA.The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on September 17, 1997.Real ..., September 16, 2002 By DEBRA SAWYERWhen I chill out and blow some smoke into the air, I play my LOST BOYZ cd's and I'm telling you it's lovely. LOST BOYZ are some original catz. They keep to themselves, never cross each others boundaries and keep it real. I respect their group to the fullest. To listen to their music is to know them and what they represent. All I can say is, their talented brotha's and their music is off the chain!!!!Year Album Chart positions Billboard 200 Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums 1999 LB IV Life 32 8LB Fam does it again, December 26, 1999 By Lil..CJGoing back to 97 when I heard the Lost Boyz for the first time, I knew then, this is the group I will always listen to, and I was right. From 'Get Up' to 'Music Makes me High' and other great tracks off Legal Drug Money, I never ditched the LB fam. When Love,Peace and Napiness was released, I couldn't wait to listen to it, and I wasn't disappointed. Cheeks and Tah always rip it up. Much love to the other LB membas, but I am more into Cheeks tight lyrics and Tah's (R.I.P) constant background shoutouts. After buying LB IV Life, I can only hope for another great cd. LB Fam always gives me my monies worth. 'Ghetto Jiggy' and 'Take a Hike' are just superb and Cheeks rips those tracks up like non-other can. (can't wait for a Take a hike music video because I realy don't dig 'Plug me in' that much) Going back to my review. Anyone who loves GREAT QUALITY Rap/Hip Hop will love this cd as much as I do. Great beats, tight lyrics, and is just so up beat it can be played anywhere.. well, almost anywhere. Great party CD, and is worth the money it is being sold for. Much Love, peace. On the night of March 28, 1999, at a birthday party for Mr. Cheeks, Freaky Tah was shot in the head while exiting the Sheraton Hotel in Queens. Tah was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:20 am, at the age of 27. The getaway driver, Raheem Fletcher, was sentenced to 7 years in prison for Manslaughter. In 2001, Kelvin Jones pleaded guilty to the murder.
