One Big Nut

About Me

Sometime in 03' Andy and myself(Jason) began brainstorming an idea to start a band. A band with no rules or limitations. A band with an open-door policy. A group of people with mixed musical influences that come together to create something that is fresh and new. Something a little different. Something a bit nuts. For the first year or so we just jammed out acoustically in the living room of my old house in Colona. After a few years of this we then met Chuck. He jammed with us a few times and things seemed to be getting started. Then I got pregnant and started building a family. This put or band on hold for a bit. I was concentrating on become closer to my stepchildren, and awaiting my new baby. Andy headed off to Western to finish up his college goals. At the time this seemed like it might the end of our Rock n roll dreams. When really little Maddux was actually just what I needed. In trying to prepare myself for fatherhood, and create a home for the kids I bought a house. A house with a basement. This all happened in the spring of 05'. Then in October of the same year I lost my Grandfather,George. This was the man who taught me everything I know about percussion. He had spent 40 years playing in all sorts of bands. From Jazz and Big bands to good old country VFW bands. In his passing I acquired his set of limited edition Louis Bellson drums. At first it just sat in my basement and I was a bit weirded out about playing it. It put me in a position were I would have to deal with the feelings. After thinking this over for a few days I realized that my grandfather would want me to play and enjoy his drums the way he enjoyed them for so many years. So I took some time and played them by myself until I worked my way through the issues of missing him. Then I was ready to go. Andy and myself started jamming on a regular basis. We knew we needed to find a bass player and lucky for us a friend of mine, who was living with us for a while, had played bass in the past. It had been a few years since he had played but was wanting to get back to playing again. It just so happened that Andy owned a bass so he left it at the house to give Steve the chance to get reacquainted with the instrument. It wasn't long before he was up to speed and we were practicing together as a band. This line up spent all of the winter, spring, and summer of 07' practicing two and three times a week. Not long after we started these practices I started building my junk kit. Things were going well and we made plans to play a show for our friends, in the now renamed Dungeon, during my annual Halloween Party of 07".Two weeks prior to this Steve had some personal issues pop up and had to take a permanent hiatus from the band. All along Andy and myself have said that we have an open-door policy were if someone wants to jam with us they can feel free to do so, but that also means that if some one we play with has to step away then we have to deal with it. The flip side of the coin sucks but an open door policy makes for a lot of great musical creation. We found our selves painted into a corner. Rather then letting Steve's departure hold us back we decided that if we had done it all those years just the two of us. Then we could do it just the two of us again. The Halloween Party came and we played like three hours in Dungeon. There were a bunch of beautiful ladies there and most of them were shaking it to the tunes. For us the dungeon Halloween show was a success. Not long after that we were able to bring Chuck back into the fold. He was primarily a Guitar player but he has a lot of musical talent and was willing to try the bass at least until we found a more permanent bass player. A few weeks after the return of Chuck we had a benefit show at Mixtapes. This show went over well for being our first public gig. After cutting our teeth at Mixatpes we had caught the bug and wanted to play more live shows. In attendance at that first show was Damon a long time good friend. He is an accomplished drummer and a skilled bass player. He has spent many years playing in numerous local bands and after that first gig we got to talking. We liked what we were doing and I asked if he would be interested in being a part of our revolving cast. He said he had a bass and wanted to start playing it more. In response I told him we would love to have him jam with us. The very next practice and ever since he has been a permanent fixture. All along we had the seed planted in Nataly to come jam with us. Well we booked another gig and decided we wanted to get her into the set. We started working on a minuet and when it was time to play our next show Nataly was up on stage with us playing her viola like she had been playing in a experimental band for years. In early 08" we added a few more nuts to the fold. Steve (a different steve) who plays drums and Evan who is a guitarist. These guys are young and chalked full of talent. They have been playing together for years and we are more than happy to welcome them in to our tribe. In March of 08' we parted ways with Chuck and put Damon in charge of bass full time. This was something all those involved were happpy about. Something about that bass spot. Not long there after we played our first out of town gig at the Bassment in Dubuque. The show and journey were a success and a pleasure. Then in April we lost track of Steve while bringing in Heater, of X+X fame. He has years of experience gigging and playing in local act. With his skills on the keys and his great attitude he is the fresh Nut.
