Born into a musical family, Mia Alford grew up surrounded by the arts: music, visual art, and dance. Her mother Dell Alford, is a classical pianist and music educator, her father, Vernon Alford, Jr., is a singer and guitar player, her sister, Brooke "Viosocalist" Alford, is a Contemporary Jazz and R&B violin player, and her brother, Vernon III, plays the French Horn.Mia began playing the piano when she was 6 years old. She really enjoyed studying the piano but one day she saw and heard the clarinet in an episode of "Sesame Street". She loved the smooth and mellow tones of the instrument. By age 11, when she got her chance to decide what instrument to play in middle school, it was clear that the clarinet was her first choice! She had great success as one of the top clarinetists in her middle school class. When she entered high school, that's when she became serious about pursuing a career in music. She attended college at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan and graduate school at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Throughout her higher education career, she was able to attend two prominent International music festivals: The Banff Centre and The Orford Centre for the Arts, both in Canada. All of her musical experiences have been priceless and she cherishes all of the musicians that she has been fortunate to meet; alive and deceased. For herself, she expresses that, "Music teaches you so many things about life and about yourself. It is one of the things that you will never forget when you experience it. It connects you to people that you may have not had anything in common with otherwise. Music speaks when you don't know what to say with words or how to say it. Music can change your life."
