What is CapoeiraCapoeira is a martial art, originated in the oppression of the slaves in the colonial days of Brazil. The dangerous fighting techniques are camouflaged as a beautiful, powerful and acrobatic dance, supported by Capoeira song and music, changing from carefree play into dangerous seriousness.Capoeira was forbidden in Brazil and through the times it has been an eternal struggle for the police to maintain this prohibition and to fight the poor and the criminal, who practised Capoeira.To them Capoeira wasn't just a game, but also a way of defending oneself and surviving. Not until 1937 was Capoeira permitted in Brazil. However, Capoeira was quickly spreading and today it is practised by thousand of people of all ages and sexes. For some it's a hobby - for others a life style.All over Brazil you meet Capoeira, but also in the rest of the world more and more people are seized by the vitality, rhythm and magic of Capoeira. In the early eighties Ana Pompeia gave lessons and in 1991 Steen Møller started the first Capoeira-school in Denmark, Capoeiraskolen Senzala.The school attends various Capoeira-meetings and workshops around Europe, and twice a year we have a visit from our master, Mestre Peixinho, who teaches and brings news from Brazil.
