About Me

"One of Several Unique Songs on Rebecca’s 1993 release, Raging Zephyr, combines a split-Voiced Tuba, Bagpipes, Saxophone and Amazing Vocal Leaps with a 220 year Old song, Woman of this Glen... With such Creative Musicians as Corey Manders on Jazz Saxophone and Colin Couch on Tuba play joyful textures in the weaving of an Unusual Sound... Listeners are Drawn into Rebecca’s Restless Passion through her Full Ranging Vocals, Whether Singing Acapella or Backed by a Full Band… Using Carefully Chosen and Original Lyrics, She Treats difficult Subjects with Courage, Precision, and Vibrant Emotion..." (Steve Rowat, Thought Transfer Music)Rebecca has been an inspired singer since the age of 12 when she started actively researching folk traditions. She has a particular interest in the stories of older songs, bringing them to life with ornamentation and rhythmical influences from a diverse range of cultural traditions. Her vocal style, firmly rooted in the tradition of English folk singing, draws for further inspiration from East Indian classical singing, Irish Sean-nós singing, Balkan harmonic singing and South African 4-part percussive harmonies. Rebecca Barclay has performed widely across Canada and the UK, both as a soloist and as a compliment to an assortment of bands, ranging in style from folk choirs to jazz and celtic rock. This penchant for cultural diversity builds a diversity of techniques and derives from growing up in the core of a multi-ethnic Canadian city.Rebecca plays solo or with a band, currently working in collaboration with John Steele a gutarist from Durham area in North East England. Since their debut as a duo in 2002, Durham guitarist John Steele and singer Rebecca Barclay have been publicly and critically acclaimed for their unusual treatment of traditional folk songs sourced carefully from both sides of the Atlantic. On their new collaborative CD, Islet, you won’t find the standard clutter of instrumentation. Guitar and voice are tailored to speak with a mesmerising complexity, a riveting focus to clearly tell the story of each song.To find out more details, see their site: www.myspace.com/rebeccabarclayandjohnsteele or their website: www.barclayandsteele.comTo purchase CDs go to: http://www.barclayandsteele.com/5.htmlFor more information see Rebecca's website: www.rebeccabarclay.comI edited my profile with Thomas Myspace Editor V4.4 (www.strikefile.com/myspace)
