ULISES TROYO

I appear on scene on February 2nd, 1957 in Mexico City. My first guitar comes to me at the age of eight, although I really begin learning some chords from some of The Beatles’ songs two years later. Fascinated from girls’ reaction towards music performers and after the sequential destruction of three guitars due to my “Casanova” behavior at school, I beg for piano lessons and Maestro Alfredo Vázquez Sánchez teaches me formally for about two years, until he finds out I can’t read music. So I end secretly buying my fourth guitar, learning a lot of songs from my several trips to the US, mostly to Southern California. I write my first song (Sheree’) in 1976 and keep composing from personal experiences until I’m accepted for the “Up with people” show in 1979. I start singing and playing Pop and Country music on guitar and piano with a friend at local bars. One year later we form MAPLE, a Soft-Rock Band, performing our “The American Popular Song” show at High schools, Colleges and Social Centers. In 1981, I leave music aside for a while to study Graphic Design. I get married in 1983, move to Cancun in 1986 and settle a very successful Sign Design Company in 1987, working at nights at a bar, performing as a solo piano player and singer. I get divorced in 1991 and return to Mexico City working as a Free Lance Designer. In 1995 I get back to Cancun, where I also get totally back into music, performing at Hotels like “Kristal”, “Ritz Carlton”, “Le Meridien” and “Royal Sands”, as well as in bars like “Hoolihan’s” and “Escape” and in malls like “Plaza Caracol” and “Plaza Kukulcan”. In 2001 I get back to Mexico City, invited by the OLD DAYS BAND to open their shows. I also perform at the “Maria Isabel Sheraton Hotel” Lobby Bar for a year and later I’m hired by “Corporación Mexicana de Restaurantes” (CMR) for the “Restaurant Meridiem”. I record my first CD “Remembranzas” in 2004, with the 16 most requested songs from my repertoire as a solo piano player. I still play Romantic Pieces from the 70’s at “Restaurant Meridiem” on Saturdays. I’m still hired for Private Social Events and I’m now working on my next project called “Now & Then”, a two CD project about my present life as a musician (Now) and how I got into music (Then).
