Eudel“Music must have space to breathe, space to convey emotion – and emotion’s the essential part.â€
That’s the credo of Bielefeld musician Eudel, whose songs ooze with that elusive ingredient.
Heartfelt songs that are untamed one moment and then affectionate like a kitten the next. Tracks with the unfailing power to suck you out of a deep melancholy stupor and draw you in close like a log fire on a nippy day.
“I’m not interested in labels or genres; with me it’s more about style, good taste, attitude and feelings conveyed in music,†says Eudel, a talented artiste whose musical roots are in late-Eighties post punk bands such as Dinosaur Jr, Hüsker Dü and The Lemonheads.
But the influence of songwriters such as Neil Young, Tom Waites and Nick Drake is also apparent on I’m A Wheel And I Will Turn On You, his latest offering.
Eudel could be grouped with the classic singer-songwriter, though not in the traditional sense of someone like, for example, Bob Dylan, the prototypical political songsmith. Nowadays you would call his music alternative country.
His uncanny knack for creating memorable melodies means Eudel’s songs have great pop appeal, yet without being cheesy and commercial.
“My lyrics are very personal, and although each song is open to interpretation by others, who may read into them things I did not intend, I get a real kick out of that!â€
Apart from Mario Waniek’s guitar, and a few other sounds, the songs are presented in stripped down form a la unplugged, forcing that all-important emotion to the foreground, with the end product being an easily accessible record. Like an uprooted tree in a storm, the bare bones of the songs expose the heart and guts of the music, stirring a certain feeling deep in the listener’s soul.
“I can’t be bothered chasing the latest trends, there’s too much of a punk rocker in me for that,†says Eudel.
Stubbornly following the musical path of his creation, that’s Eudel’s destiny.
And if the listener can figure that out, the songs speak for themselves.Eudel: Acoustic and electric guitars and vocals
