♥ The Fabulous Elliot
One summer afternoon, I walked into a place on Melrose Ave. Asked the girl at front that I was there to see "Elliot". "Sure. He's in the back" I walked through a tiny aisle. At that point, Elliot was mystery to me. He is now known as one of LA's favorite radio personalities on LA's most popular and listened radio show on Star 98.7. First he was introduced as Hollywood celebrity hair stylist, and within first 30seconds he was on the radio, everybody was in love with Elliot. And then, naturally he became regular on the show, and now he has his own segment reviewing movies. When I called him inquiring the interview, he revealed that he was also a singer. So this is what I know right now: Elliot the hair stylist, Elliot the radio personality, and Elliot the songwriter/singer/performer....
I got to the back room and saw a man in a silver piggy tail wig and another guy getting his hair done by the guy in the wig. It was my first meeting Elliot. "Elliot?" He turned and smiled. "Hi! will be a few minutes, OK?" Elliot's salon was very private and truly was really nice. Warm brownish faux finished wall, antique metal furnitures and greens. He offers me a chair and finishes up his customer. I'm feeling nervous. The salon is so private, feels like I invaded the private area. Customer's left and Elliot opens up the back door, beyond that there's a nice tiny patio. "Do you mind if I smoke?" Then he relaxes in his chair.
CGJ: You're known to cut a lot of celebrities' hair. Could you name some of your clients?
Elliot: Well, I was a wig stylist before. I worked on Joan Collins from Dynasty, Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210) when she was little, Boy George, Diana Ross, Ru Paul and numerous commercials,TV shows and films, like Divine's 'Hair Spray'... What happened was I wanted to go back to do hair dressing, because I was sick of people (Laugh) When I started as a hair dresser, I was sticking in the wig pins! I forgot (it was not a wig)! I almost hurt a woman, and then I came to Melrose. Over the years, I've done Davey from Monkeys, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Goo Goo Dolls, Dogstar.... Scott Wolf and Oscar winning actress.. Meryl Streep... A lot of theatrical actors in town. Top models, Chippendale dancers(strippers) I don't know. There are so many. Out of all, Diana Ross is one of my favorite celebrities. She ended up being really nice to me. I do her wigs. I'm her wig specialist.
CGJ: Did people find out about you through word of mouth?
Elliot: It's all word of mouth. I've never advertise or been advertised on one thing. My work speaks it for self. You know, all I have to do is to do my work. I've been interviewed by Japanese television three times for my wigs. My wigs are famous.
CGJ: One of your clients, Johnny Rzeznik(Goo Goo Dolls-GGD)'s hair got a lot of people talking and a lot of people seem to have similar hair cut nowadays. How do you feel about that?
Elliot: To tell you the truth, Johnny had a really good idea about what to do with his hair. He cuts his own hair a lot, though. He's a good hair dresser. I do the color. I made him blond for his world tour. (Taking out a couple of photos from his drawer) See, here's John and me at Greek Theater. Here's Robby and me. He's playing keyboard for my new song. That's my producer, Nathan. GGD is a big part of my new record. How GGD came to me, is that what you wanna know?
CGJ: Sure.
Elliot: Well, I'm a very spiritual person. One day, I decided to write a song and ended up recording it. But I was having a lot of problems with the person I was originally working with. So, I was praying God, "give me a sign, if I'm to continue my music". And basically John Rzeznik walked into my salon. One day, I played my music to him, and he helped me copyright my song and hooked me up with A & R and an attorney. Now I have a new record coming up. At that time, I was going through a very very traumatic time of my music, and John came and got me out the clouds. Then he started talking about me on the radio, Star98.7.
CGJ: That's how you ended up on the show?
Elliot: Yeah. Ryan Seacrest (DJ: Ryan Seacrest For the Ride Home with Lisa Foxx, Star 98.7 ) started calling me up! We got along, I thought he was funny, and he thought I was funny... When I was not on the show, the station was getting a lot of complains, and Ryan apologized on the air! And , they started calling me more frequently. That's how I have my own segment now.
CGJ: Did being on the most popular radio show in LA change your life in anyway?
Elliot: Yeah, it was just a little frightening. I've always been secretive, low key person. I'd normally run from something frightening, you know. But you have to overcome your fear and turn it into courage to get any kind of success. And that's what I'm doing, I'm just trying to open up the door for other things that are coming into my life.
CGJ: But do you realize how unforgettable you were on the show? I think everybody was just charmed when you went on the show for the first time!
Elliot: Ah, no... I've been told I'm not forgettable(Laugh) Sometimes I want people to forget about me!
CGJ: You're an hair stylist, but how come the station decided for you to do Movie Review?
Elliot: You know, I don't know. It originally started as "the World through the eyes of Elliot" and then it was changed. I think Ryan felt comfortable with some sort of format. This is a great format for me, actually. Because I don't have to go to the studio, I can do everything from my salon and people know my voice, but, they don't know me. This way I can keep my animenity, yet, express myself the way I want to. By the way, people can log on to the station's website, www.star987.com and if they want to listen to my show, it's between 5pm and 7pm (pacific time) on Fridays. And, (Talking closer on my tape recorder) email Ryan and tell him how fabulous I am! So, I don't have to end up on the street of Santa Monica Laugh)
(Elliot's assistant Jamie walks in)
Jamie: Haai!
Elliot: Ha-i! This is my assistant Jamie. She assists me in salon, when I'm traveling, performing, like when I have to go to Europe.... I'd love to go to Japan(Again talking close to my tape recorder). I wanna cut hair in a salon in Tokyo for like two weeks and charge them a lot of money!(Laugh)ÂI
Jamie: Yeah, we wanna do that!
CGJ: OK, OK. I'll see what I can do about that.... I have some more questions for you, though. I listened to your song "I flip my wig" on your website "bivacious.com". Your music has a really good hook. What is your inspiration when writing a song?
Elliot: My inspiration is just like when I cut hair. I think it comes from my heart. My songs come from my dream and I write it down when I wake up. Like when I cut hair, I first meet the person, go home and think about the person. And then, I have this image in my dream how the person's hair should look like, and I can transform that through my hands. Or the love ballad I wrote, I dreamed about the song.
CGJ: How are you balancing being a busy hair stylist and recording schedule?
Jamie: It's crazy.
Elliot: I've got to create. I'm always busy. When I'm not cutting hair, I have to paint. When I'm not painting, I have to decorate, if not I have to sing. I just have to create, or I can't sleep.
CGJ: You told me you perform in drag. How long does it take you to make the transformation?
Elliot: Well, I consider myself an artist, not a drag artist. I don't always perform in drag. I like to be theatrical for my show. You know, 'cause it's a SHOW! Each song will be done differently, different costumes, wigs, dancers... It doesn't take that long. (To Jamie) 20minuite? 25 minutes? Jamie assists me in back stage.
CGJ: How did you come up with name "Bivacious" on your website (www.baivacious.com )?
Elliot: Well, the truth is Bivacious is sort of like character I created for different music. I'm Elliot, and I created different characters for different things. Bivacious's like a wild Disco Queen from 70's making a come back!
CGJ: How many characters you have?
Elliot: Oh, so many..... You know, for my new song "the Bomb", Baboom will be performing that. She's just a wild character from 50's and a blond "Bomb", see? My best friend, Cosmo, creates my costumes. He designs for everyone. 'N Sync... you name it. He has a store called "New York, New York" on Melrose.
CGJ: Who's your favorite character to perform?
Elliot: Ah, I don't know... there are just so many... I guess, me, I like me(Smile)
CGJ: I have a feeling from how you charmed the people in LA by being on the radio, you will be a successful singer quickly. Are you ready for that?
Elliot: You know, you're not the first person who tells me that. I've been told that constantly. Yeah, I feel like I'm ready for it. You know, will be nice to have some recognition, and money to do something I 'd like to do. I have a dream of building a huge house for recovering alcoholics and boys who are prostitute. And I'm gonna name that house, "House of Michael" from great archangel Michael.
Jamie: Elliot is extremely talented, and he's the queen of everything! Anybody who come in touch with Elliot is very fortunate.
Elliot: I think I wanna keep cutting hair even when I become famous. I wanna be like a big celebrity and going to somebody's backstage and say "he-y, I'm here to cut hair". Like Blondie!
