Growing up in Cornwall, England, Richard James began writing and recording music as a teenager. DJing at raves in his town, he made enough contacts to land a recording contract. Various EPs were released under his Aphex Twin stage name in the early '90s until he had enough material to compile his highly acclaimed album, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, which was heralded as a major step forward in ambient music. Well-received albums were recorded and released through 1996, at which point James disappeared from the music scene for several years. Finally reemerging in 2001 with the middle-of-the-road effort, Drukqs,, James has been again absent from the music scene. With music this deep in his blood, however, it's only a matter of time before the turntable calls him back. -underground
