About Me

Tonya began singing as soon as she could talk. By the ripe-old age of four, her chirping had progressed from the innocent 'You Are My Sunshine' to the more precocious Paul Simon's 'Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover.' With family roots in Kansas and the Carolinas, her early music experiences were confined to church and school, and although she wrote her first poem at age 7, her songwriting didn't begin until her final year of high school when she pulled her mother's old Martin guitar out of the closet. She hasn't stopped strumming since, playing at bars, festivals, private parties, funerals, and weddings-- in South Carolina, Virginia, California, North Carolina, and most lately in Wyoming. Her first album is in progress and should be finished sometime this century.
She has been blessed to open for and/or share the stage with Katie Herzig, Steve Key, Joe Koenig, Stuart Mason, Paul Hobbs, Craig Dingman, Jade Jackson, Loren Radis, Bryson Jennings, The Keen Kousins, Ryan Huie, Benyaro, Beth Wimmer, Kenley Young, Jon Bartel, Katie Boeck, and many, many talented others...

Influences: Major influences include Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Patty Griffin, Kate Wolf, Loretta Lynn, the Carter Family, Allison Krauss, the Judds, and any Southern Baptist church filled with Tyners and Bruces. Significant listening has also focused on Singer / Songwriters like Rodney Crowell, Neil Young, Guy Clark, Buddy Miller, James McMurtry, Steve Earle, and Country musicians like Hank Williams, Sr., Buck Owens, Bob Wills, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jr., Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, George Jones, and Waylon Jennings. Other Country / Americana / Bluegrass favorites include Tom Russell, Dwight Yoakam, Shawn Colvin, Greg Brown, Slaid Cleaves, Robert Earl Keen Jr., George Strait, Ian Tyson, and Chris LeDoux. I also really dig the blues and have listened to a lot of Billie Holliday, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lucinda Williams, and Susan Tedeshi. And then, there's my eclectic side, where you can find me jamming out to Pat Benatar, Southern Culture on the Skids, Hank III, Joan Osborne, Santana, the Devil Makes Three, Rhonda Vincent, Widespread Panic, Government Mule, the Allman Brothers, the Eagles, the Grateful Dead, Joan Jett, the Beastie Boys, Stevie Wonder, Guns N Roses, the Black Crowes, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, the Smashing Pumpkins, Bon Jovi, Styx and John Cougar Mellancamp. The list really does go on and on and is added to every day, for example, I'm digging KT Tunstall today...
Sounds Like: You tell me... So far, I've been told that I'm an original. Others have flattered me beyond belief with suggestions that I have hints of the following: Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobbie Gentry, Kitty Wells, Iris DeMent, Stevie Nicks, Kate Wolf and Joan Baez. Still other comparisons have been made to Xena and Pocahontas. Want to add to my list? I'd love to know what you think...
