"The Bass is the Base", and Martin found this base when he was 6 years old, because his father used to sing the bass in the opera choir of Bonn, Germany, and his mother used to play Bass-Recorder in a recorder-ensemble.
But after learning to play the bass-recorder, there was first the piano, then the trumpet, and at the age of 15 the bass-guitar, before he made it to the double bass at the age of 17.
Being taught classical stuff by Christopher Meux to fill the low register of the school and the local orchestra of Prüm, his German home-town close to the border of Belgium and Luxembourg, he soon started to play Dixieland, swing & jazz on double bass in local groups,
and Jazzrock, experimental rock & progressive metal with the bass guitar.Finishing school in 2000, he became member of a local pop-coverband called "crossing", which used to play a lot in this region of Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. From 2001 until 2005, he studied Chemistry in Bonn and Mainz, where he played some sessions and joined local artists. Finally, he switched to study Bass guitar and was accepted at the conservatory of Amsterdam in the summer of 2005 where he has been taught bass guitar by Theo de Jong and Double Bass by Ruud Ouwehand.Since then, he used to play with all different kind of people all different styles which exist. To name a few:
Princess Christina Concours with Morris Kliphuis, French horn, Muziekgebouw aan't Ij, Amsterdam Dec.2006
MK Six at the Jazz Festival Bukarest May 2007
North Sea Jazz Festival Rotterdam 2007 with the Morris Kliphuis group
Alkmaar Sail Festival with Jazzmerize, September 2007He keeps looking for the right groove and sound, no matter what music he plays.
