Cherie mon amour (remix) - Gil Semedo
Gil Semedo was born on October 25, 1974 on the islands of Cape Verde. He is 6 when his family moves to The Netherlands. At 15, an imitation of his idol Michael Jackson brings Gil to the finals of the "Henny Huisman Sound mix Show", a successful TV-show in The Netherlands.
In 1991, under the name "Gil & the Perfect 2", Gil Semedo released his first record "Menina" (Girl). "Menina” was a huge success in the Portuguese speaking countries. His "Catchy" compositions, his dancing skills and his famous Caboswing (Gil’s own musical genre made of a mix of Capeverdean traditional music such as Coladeira, Funana and Batuco with other styles like zouk, pop and RnB) are only a few ingredients of his success.
Gil Semedo has performed on many stages throughout Europe, USA and Africa. He has composed most of his repertoire and has sold over 500,000 albums, which makes him the Portuguese speaking most successful artist in the young generation.
1995 - Gil Semedo released the album "Verdadi" (Truth) which includes the hit song “Maria Julia”. This hit gave Batuco (a forgotten Cape Verdean music style) a new boost. Other artists followed Gil in this approach resurrecting Batuco.
1996 – Gil Semedo performs before an overcrowded stadium in Praia, the Capeverdeam capital, for independence day. This concert is broadcasted live worldwide via satellite, a premiere in the history of Cape Verdean television.
1999 - Gil Semedo releases his hit album "Nos Lider" (Our Leader) selling 100,000 copies within three months. "Nos Lider" made Golden and Platinum in several countries. At the end of 1999 Gil miraculously survives a tragic accident in which he loses one of his feet.
2001 – "Best of Gil 1991-2001" is released including the bonus track: "Obrigado" (Thank you). In this song the artist thanks everyone who supported him during recovery. At the "Cabo Music Awards 2001" the record won Cape Verdean best sold album of the year and. Gil also received three other awards during the ceremony.
2003 – Over 100,000 people attend Gil’s performance at "Gamboa Festival 2003". Millions of people follow the event through radio, TV and Internet.
2004 – The single "Sweet Honey" is a hit on urban radio station FunX. The song’s video, directed by Rick Arnold, is broadcasted worldwide on music channels.
2005 – The song "Lembra Tempo" appears on the soundtrack of Portugal’s box-office hit movie of the year: "Sorte Nula" directed by Fernando Fragata and rewarded at the Boston International Film Festival, USA.
2006 - "Nha Vitória" (My Victory): In this album, the singer mixes his life lessons with his never-ending passion for music. After overcoming the obstacles, Gil Semedo offers a mature album about love, friendship and peace.
2007 – Gil’s carreer moves to another level when José Da Silva becomes his management. With a new team, Gil Semedo gets back in the studio for a new album. With arrangements by Manu Lima, “Cabopop” is recorded in Cape Verde and Paris with the best musicians. “Cabopop” is also the name of the association Gil launched with a few friends for the promotion of Capeverdean culture. More acoustic than the previous ones, this album shows Gil’s artistic evolution throughout the years. “Hey Mama”, featuring Dice is the song Gil picked to present “Cabopop”.
